For my Location they told me that it might be available in 1-2 months (which could be in Thailand also 12 months). I am living in North Pattaya.

I'll stick to TT&T.

I don't know what 8 mbits would change for most of us

as the problem is more the limitation on international access (Europe, USA,...)

than the access to (local) Thailand sites.

I often have a 2 mb access to local Thai sites

but rarely have more than 0.5 mb to Europe sites...

Many guys arround me seems to have this 500 kbits limit for international

even if some have 1, 2 or 4 mb contract

Let hope it will improve... soon

It would help if you said what soi on the DS as often when trying to get internet service from some suppliers they may have it on Soi Khao Noi for example but not on Soi Nernplubwaan.

True have put a sign up (though only in thai) on Soi Khao Noi saying that the 8mb service is available now on that soi, but no such signs anywhere else though.

Can't wait till somebody gets this service and reports on actual speeds, price seems good though as long as you have truevisions or a true phone, 1100 baht/month which also includes wireless acess inside pattaya at speeds of supposedly 2Mb.

They run the service over their cable TV lines so I think you have to be in a Banglaumung cable-TV service area.

I must admit that, having lived in Jomtien and Pratumnak for the last 6 years, I've never heard of Banglamung Cable TV.

So I guess that it's back to trying to find the nearest True Internet office - do I really have to trek all the way out to North Pattaya for this? Is there nothing in Pattaya Tai?

BTV is available on the Darkside, I have 3 mates who have it, One in Khao Talo, one in Khao Noi and one in Nernplubwan, it is not rebranded Sophon(well it was not at that point in time anyways), I had Sophon before I switched to Thipmanee (Im in Khao Noi).

For what its worth, my 8mb True is absolutely awesome, no probs hitting DL speeds around the 1.2MB/s mark.

Thanks, I'll call around their office next time I'm shopping in Friendship. I have Sophon TV in my loom, but the picture is almost always lousy. The teelac watches it, but I can't. I wonder if that might imply a poor internet connection too?

I think you may be confused. Sophon and Banglamung are separate cable television companies. Banglamung's service area is generally East Pattaya (and possibly more northerly areas of Banglamung District). I don't believe they have any offices near Friendship (I posted their office numbers above).

Sophon at one time was experiementing with internet over cable TV lines awhile back but I don't think much came of it. Banglamung Cable does offer internet service over their cable lines. I don't know the technical details but supposedly they lease a fat internet pipe from CAT and then splice and dice the line up and pipe it through their cable TV lines. (You can have a cable + internet package or only the internet service but with either, you have to be hooked-up with one of their cable lines.) However they do it, it works great and is cheap.

I followed your directions and found their office last week, thanks. There's a pleasant youngish lady "manning" the office who speaks quite good English. Sophon do offer internet over their cables, but unfortunately it's neither very cheap nor very fast. The cost was 1990 Baht/month for a 2 Mbps package, which basically is the same as I have at the moment in the condo from ThaiIT. So on the old principle of better the devil that you know, I guess there's no point in switching to Sophon. Anybody who's got Sophon cable TV, but cannot get a moderately fast internet connection for whatever reason (e.g. no phone line), may find it worth looking at.

Next stop is True to see if I can get their 8 Mbps package in Jomtien.

I have had the 8Mb True service for almost a year now and I must say does more than it says on the tin. Never had any problems except for the one time when lightening took out the DSLAM near the village I live on in Soi Nernplubwaan, but was back online within a few hours. Hard to believe less than 2 years ago I was stuck with a shity TOT 1Mb connection that cost 2700 baht a month.

Yes I had B-TV before and it was very stable, and very good speeds, but did not like the fixed ip issue, and could not find a wired router. So changed back to 3BB.

So I have been in this place on Soi Nernplubwan for about 3 months now and the free TV is not cutting it nor is the free wifi so shopping for alternatives to both.

Sounds like the true 8mb package, and then some TV (possible phone service) might be the way to go. I saw above that with true you also get wifi access for free in the ptya area, is that the case and is it good (numerous locations, decent connections?) Any comments?

Sounds like BTV would have a inet/tv bundle as well (no phone i guess) - does anyone have tv from them and can comment? my key goal wrt tv is to get asn to see NA football and hockey, so interested to know if btv even has that channel.

B-TV has internet + cable TV or internet only packages. Call them for current list of channels.

Interestingly I have seen lots of trucks/workmen from CAT, True, and possibly others hanging lines and installing what look like junction or relay boxes all along soi NPW the past few months.

No better with TOT for me in Nong Pla Yai...

It has just started raining so my internet will be off soon.....
