Bangkok’s sewers breeding more mosquitoes

BANGKOK: -- Many of Bangkok’s roadside sewers are now major breeding grounds for mosquitoes because of their faulty design, the Public Health Ministry Spokesperson, Nittaya Chanruang, told TNA on Thursday.

The slope of the sewers is not steep enough and slows the drainage of waste water, and causes frequent blockages, said Mrs.Nittaya, who is also a civil engineer.

The stagnant water allows mosquitoes to lay their eggs.

The larvae of the common and striped mosquitoes, the latter of which carry dengue fever, can survive in both clean and dirty water.

The Public Health Ministry is working to destroy the larvae in their water sources, she added.

The use of anti-mosquito lotions could reduce the risk of contracting dengue fever, Mrs. Nittaya said.

Five people died of dengue fever in Bangkok last year, while more than 5,000 residents had contracted it.
