Even in America we have an image of the kind, polite English gentleman in his fine clothes and bowler hat. The way you guys are going on here it's as if they are an endangered species. Why is that?

well, james bond was a classic example, a dying breed english gentleman and whorist at the same time :D

A definate dying breed for sure, the Modern English gentleman is to be found covered in tattoos with a skinhead haircut, wearing ridiculous clothes and a pair of reeboks, and has a tendency to call everybody a 'Fakkin wa.nker' ! :D

Very suave and sophisticated..........yea right.

Bring back National Service!!! :o

Its a tough call professor but I'd wager the least complaints are about those from Lichtenstein or Andorra..... although I hear the Andorrans are mean drunks.  :o

cv

That's funny, since I ALWAYS say, (when asked: "Hello, where are you from")...

Liechtenstein.

You should see the faces...and the answer is mostly....Oooohhhh yes, I know, close to America, right?

I give them compliments about their knowledge...and than they laugh :D

Everybody happy :D

James Bond was a Scotsman. British, but not English.

Oh; Forgetting the greater and lesser known James Bonds, George Lazenby and David Niven.

Personally I still think that Sean Connery was a really great one. I felt Roger Moore sometimes seemed a bit out of place.

What a load of rubbish - I can think of 20 friends and up to 40 acquaintances that are considered decent, well educated, successfull, non tatoo guy's all of whom hold senior and very well paid positions in multinational companies in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Beijing and Bangkok. All are in their 30's, to my knowledge most have attended state schools (certainly 4 of my friends went private due to their parents wealth) but everyone of them can carry themselves across the full social spectrum without embarrasing themselves. Most of them are English, couple of Scots and Northern Irish lads. In multinational companies, you come across a lot of Brits in Asia that are doing exceptionally well for their age and are as far removed from your stereotype as you can imagine.

what type of Westerner is the perfect Westerner for Thailand, and do they really exist?

The perfect type of westener would be someone that could help Thais and Thailand like Jim Thompson did for the Silk Industry.

Hmmm...let's see. What nationality was he? :o

I have asked this question of a lot of Thai people

Aussies are the ones they like the most as the "She'll be right" attitude is more in line with their own views.

If you were German they would say the Germans are best.

If you were from Venus they would say Venusians were best.

It's called walking the middle path.

Rocket Science it ain't.
