Once upon a time, Mr. Sun was very lazy. Luckily, Father Chicken comes to the rescue with all the Thai characters. Have fun picking them out!

That was one of my first attempts (with the help of Thai friends) at translating Thai to English. You can see the url to my site across the top, and some of the translation in English.

I didn't realise what I was getting into and by the time I knew it was too late - Thais objected to all sorts of things, cussing, disrespect, etc - so I had to put a disclaimer on my site.

Here's part one where you can read about the cartoonist as well: Thai Alphabet Cartoon (Part One)

Go to the archives to get the rest.

There are six parts, all broken down into sound bites. Not one person helping agreed on how it should be translated (one is barely talking to me today). I'm sure if I were to do it today, it would be different still.

Thanks for that background! It comes across as very entertaining, and the Thai family has crowded around the computer to watch it. They enjoyed it more than I did.

Until the complications started, it was a lot of fun. It was treated it as Thai lessons, only cartoon style.

But one of the Thais was older generation Thai (60's). One was Bangkok proper Thai (late 40's). One was Changmai hip Thai (late 20's early 30's). And one lived in the US (early 30's).

The two girls (20-30) did not see what the problem was. To them, Thais spoke like that and worse. Also, they didn't have a problem with the references made about monks (there is something else but I don't recall at the moment).

So a compromise on the translation was made.

I contacted the designer and he said it was ok for us to delete words out of the sound bites.

The older Thai took out what she thought was disrespectful, but still left some iffy things in.

But by then, it was too late for the Bangkok proper Thai... he's still pissed at me...

I also thought it was great, and very refreshing to see something educational in Thai that also has the guts to be irreverent and funny. :)

I understand the commercial version is watered down, but it might still be of interest. Do you know if it is still for sale and if so, where?

The commercial version is excellent (I have a copy). I haven't seen it in stores.

Contact Idiom Co.,Ltd.

If you can't find them, then contact the designer, Pairach, through his YouTube page (he put the cartoon on YouTube).

I also thought the adult version was funny too. Hilarious even. And I LOVE his designs!

It took awhile for me to 'get' what the objections were when the translations were being done. It was last year, before I knew that how Thais talked to each other is not how we are being taught.

Also, parents were upset because their kids were googling and finding the adult version online. I personally wouldn't want my five or six year old to find it.
