Thailand lowers automobile manufacturing and export targets

BANGKOK: -- Thailand is expected to produce 940,000 vehicles this year, compared with the 1.4 million vehicles manufactured in 2008, industry sources said Tuesday.

Surapong Phaisitphatthanapong, spokesman for the automobile manufacturing club of the Federation of Thai Industries, said vehicle exports in 2009 were expected to reach 510,000 units, down considerably from the previous target of 784,000 units.

Thailand is a major hub for vehicle production in South-East Asia.

Vehicle and automotive parts ranked as Thailand's second highest export earner in 2008, when the sector earned the kingdom 15.6 billion dollars.

Anytime industrial production is down it's good news for the environment. Let's hope there is more good news coming.

33% less cars. What about compensation and wages for the (laid off?) workers who won't be able to buy food for their families anymore?

PS: how did you ever get to Thailand...?...walking ? :)

You never use public transport...a car...a plane...a bus..a motorbike...?

Your answer is the most silly one I've read in a long time.

I'm sure they fed their families just fine before they started producing new cars.

You're not very good in answering questions, are you ?

You're likely to be one of those environmentalists who is one of the first to jump in a car or on a plane....

...an keep silent about the environment. :)

What makes you think I'm an environmentalist?

Your words:

"Anytime industrial production is down it's good news for the environment"

I feel for the people losing jobs. Prior to building cars the average factory worker was probably toiling in the rice fields of Isan for B100 per day-when they could get the work :)

Unfortunately the Great Recession is making an impact on Asia. Its just the begining...

The Detroit of the east will have the same fate than real Detroit. It won't take a long time before Toyota will start to shut down their thai factories to move it to China where workers are still humble slaves. :)

As long as the cave has air-con, internet access and satellite TV, you know, just the basics.

Humble slaves I wish? Maybe a few years ago but nowadays the workers are only motivated by money and career advancement. If they don't get what they want they just move somewhere else as very easy to get jobs, Chinese are much more independent than Thai. Also wages in the bigger cities (like Shanghai) are basically the same as Thai these days. Better to go to somewhere else.

As for car production being down here - it will hurt us all as the money generated will need to be recovered somewhere else and sure won't be tourism for now.
