Hi all,

my girlfriend and i are planning to get married in November. Due to the long waiting times for visas (UK), and the fact that i will have to get back to work at some stage, we want to get as much paperwork organised before we get married as possible.

We will get married in KK, then get down to BKK and get her new passport organised. So, we will apply for the visa in her married name. If we get the TB cert done beforehand, in her maiden name, will this be a problem?

I have contacted the British Embassy about this, but no reply yet!

I have also seen some conflicting advise on different sites. So any firsthand advise would be most grateful.

Thanks

I was told at the office where you go for the TB test that the TB certificate must have same details as the passport the person will be traveling on . We had renewed my wife's passport to have her married name in it but when I took my wife and stepdaughter to have their TB tests I picked up my wifes old passport by mistake. They wouldn't let her have the test because, they said, they would have to issue the certificate in her maiden name as that was the name in the passport we'd presented, but she'd be traveling on a different passport in her married name so the UKBA wouldn't accept the certificate as valid. We had to go back the next day with her valid passport.

The information on the TB certificate includes the passport number, and they must be the same so if your wife wants her passport in her married name you must do that first, before going for the TB test, and to change/apply for a passport in her married name she must first change her ID card into her married name.

Also be aware that the TB certificate is only valid for six months and must still be valid when she arrives in the UK. At the moment settlement visa are taking three months and more to process so, although these waiting times are longer than usual, if you're trying to plan ahead remember you only have that 'six month window' after getting the TB certificate. So getting the certificate too early could work against you.

She doesn't have to apply for the visa in her married name, if she already has a passport then applying in her maiden name is no problem at all, but she must apply in the same name as the one in her passport.

Yes, the name and other details on the TB certificate must match those in the passport. There is no requirement under UK law (or Thai law, I think) for a wife to take her husband's name on marriage; therefore there is no need to change the name in her passport and she can apply in her maiden name if she wishes. The marraige certificate will supply the link to you.

No, as long as it is valid when the application is submitted.

This has come up before, and an enquiry to the UKBA got the following reply:

From: [email protected]

RE: VCS309980: General information

Thank you for your enquiry.

The fact that the TB certificate was valid when lodged with the visa application will be sufficient for purpose.

However, one should carry the certificate, and any other relevent documents, in one's hand luggage in case immigration want to see it. If in doubt, print out the above email and carry that too.

We did the TB test before getting married, and my wife changed her name on ID card and got a new passport before applying for our visa. Settlement Visa has been granted, so I guess it is ok. I will make sure the wife will be carrying her old passport when going through Immigration in the UK, just in case there is a problem.

we did same same as you the fiend no problams on arrival back to lhr

as you say just take both her passports to the immi officer and make sure she presents the tb cert to them to varify, her maiden name,

also small bit of advice, when you go through immi in uk it would be advice to go through together,in the que so your mrs dosnt have the immi officer asking her many questions on arrival.

this was the case for us late last year, when the mrs visited on v/visa,we travelled together, but i went to the uk passports, and she went to the forien passport holder que.

the w****** nearly reduced her to tears.

Thanks for the reply guys.

This was what i was thinking, and hoping. It's always good to get some firsthand knowledge.

Good point about the passport lines at LHR. Someone at LHR actually advised me this last time... as we were about to go down the separate lanes.

Yes, i realise that there is no need to change her passport and id, but it should only take a couple of days to get the new passport ect. And this will make life easier when we get back to the UK later.
