Yes you can live for less than 500$ a month here.

In the North , Chiang Rai , If you live out of town , in a village , you can rent a house with 2 bedrooms for 1000 bht a month , I know because I have done it .

In my village at the moment there is a concrete house , part furnished for 800 bht per MONTH.

Food , if you eat like the Thais then again no problem. Noodle soup for breakfast at the village shop 20 bht Big Bowl . Lunch, different restaurant - Pad Thai Goong - 25bht , and I leave there full .

In the evenings I cook what ever I buy at the market - possibly another 100 bht , chicken vegetables fruit etc . So for one day to feed yourself , an average about 150 bht per day plus your rent of say 1000 bht per month , that totals 5,562bht plus electric bill 1000bht , water bill 200 bht = 6,762 bht Thats just to eat and sleep in a house with the bills paid. Transport , rent a motor bike 2-3000 bht per month , more expensive than your house you rent .

I know many that live here on less than 12,000 bht per month , thats about 300$ They also go to the bar now and again for a beer or 2 or drink the cheap Sang Som .

If you want to live like a king you need money , if not then you can live here on far less but you will live like the Thais and there is nothing wrong with that .

I can easily live on $500 Canadian a month in Thailand. I do it every winter. My nice room in a reasonable hotel in Chiang Mai is $200 a month including air con, small fridge, TV and internet. I can eat in Thai street cafes for $3 to $5 a day = $150/month. My only luxuries are travel when I'm within Thailand and the bar bills and pretty ladies. It's cheaper to live in Thailand than stay home in Canada where I own my home with no mortgage to pay.

Hi Ian,

AND Yes, I second this post...quite possible to do what he says..easy in fact.

I live on around AU$600-700 per month in Bangkok. I definatley spend a little more on beer than i should but things even out by my not needing to indulge in other activities.

Buying beer from supermarkets, rarely visiting touristy bars, and feasting on good thai food (instead of expensive western food) also helps...

Oh and It goes without saying that NOT having a regular thai girlfriend (or any other for that matter) is the easiest way to cut down on expenses.

As far as renting somewhere for 30euro per month...

I think you would be very hard pressed to get your own appartment for that figure however i am aware of a guesthouse (shared ammentities) in Chaing mai where you can stay for 1000 baht per month.
