Just a quick question, my wife wants to visit her friend in germany she now has a 2 year extension flr(m) with a uk residency card. With reference to this statement on the german embassy website :-

You *DO NOT* need a visa for short stays in Germany if you are:

  • a citizen of the EU/EEA/EFTA
  • a spouse or child of an EU/EEA/EFTA national if you hold a British "Residence Card of a Family Member of an EEA National" and if you are travelling together with the EU/EEA/EFTA national. For all other family members please contact the Embassy.

We will be travelling together and visit for maybe 1 or 2 weeks does my wife still need a shengen visa ??

This sounds similar to a recent thread about information appearing on the French Embassy in London's website.

As far as I know, unfortunately, if you're a UK citizen your wife will still need a Schengen Visa. The German Embassy in London's visa page (accessed today) says:

"Documents required for spouses of EU nationals:

spouse's passport + copy

applicant's passport + copy

marriage certificate + copy

address in Germany

visa application form with one passport picture

If you are a spouse of an EU or German national, or if you have had a Schengen visa from the German Embassy London issued within the past 12 months, you may apply by post. "

If it's still saying this, presumably visas are required for spouses.

Here you go, here's the previous thread about a visa for France - looks like the same applies to your wife:

But the residency card must say: 'Family Member of an EEA National..' and residency must have been granted on that basis. This won't apply to your wife if you're a UK citizen living in the UK.

Just sometimes, it would be nice to have (say) Spanish nationality...

The website did say that you could now apply by post, Darren - saves on the time, hassle and travel fares going for an appointment!
