Any silver linings on Wakefield's cloudy horizon?

An 18 - 24 win away at Widnes keeps them out of the relegation zone and 8 points ahead of London and Bradford, who started the season with a six point deficit due to bankruptcy. They have a better points difference than the two teams ahead of them, Salford and Catalans.

It's looking highly likely that London Broncos will be one of the teams going down at the end of the season but Bradford have scraped together six points to level with them, and it's quite possible they'll be clawing at Wakefield's shoulders by the end of the season

Right then, ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, we're sat here on the sofa in front of our TV, but in spirit, in the Etihad Stadium Manchester, for the third game of the Magic Weekend. To try and drive down the viewing figures for the delayed telecasts tomorrow, they've just flashed up the scores to date, and all I'm going to tell you is that London - Catalans and Widnes - Salford were both close.

Anyway, while Hull City are away down to Wembley for a roundball kick-about with Arsenal, the entire population of Hull have decamped to Manchester for the big match of the season, the Hull Derby!...

Smokie will be on the edge of his seat... Nontabury likewise, I expect, unless he has masochistically switched on the aptly named FA Cup FInal,,,,

Hull FC wearing shirts celebrating the impact of LSD on modern culture, and Richard Silverwood jogs into the centre of the pitch to whistle for Hull FC to kick off.

Hull KR kick at the end of their set of six, but FC attack, and Kirk Yeaman breaks the line for the first real attack; then a high kick drops and it's knocked on in front of the posts, and Hull KR start their second set...but they can't force FC back to their own try line, and FC work up to the half-way again

Hull FC are attacking more inventively, and a a little grubber goes through, but bounces into touch before the chasers can get to it.

Hull FC kick, it comes back off the post to the bafflement of the Rovers full-back but the FC chaser can't hold on to the bouncing ball and Rovers work away up the field steadily and Liam Salter is able to dive across in the corner, but there's a bit of pushing and shoving going on, and Kirk Yeaman is unhappy about something - probably Salter scoring in the corner, and from the replays there's a couple of possible penalties in favour of Rovers but Silverwood settles for a whistle and a point at where the ball was grounded for Rovers' opening try of the match. Travis Burns makes it HKR 6 - 0 HFC

And Hull FC are cught napping as Josh Hodgson darts off the mark and Kevin Larroyer scores for the second try to Hull KR, and its 12-0 to Hulking Stonerovers

SC

And in the next set of six, Travis Burns breaks, Chris Keating keeps the ball alive and Salter scores the third for Rovers

Posted

But Second Rower ??? latches onto a Joe Westerman and bursts through the line, he's tripped but rolls over the line as two defenders crash into his prone body as he places the ball, and her's looking a bit groggy from the impacts. Jacob Miller kicks the conversion and its 18 - 6 as the half hour approaches.

Steve Ganson in the video box rules against a possible rovers try - "NO TRY - OBSTRUCTION" and Hull attack. Hull get to the sixth tackle as Ellis rolls over the try line and claims to have grounded the ball. Travis Burns gets a hand underneath the ball and the ball comes out - but it's ruled not to be a ball steal and no try - handover to Rovers

Hull KR attack, and Keating passes to Palliasina on his shoulder - BUT HE PLAYS FOR HULL! But Hull cough the ball up with a miskick and Rovers attack again.

Kirk Yeaman splits open the Rovers defence from a Palisea passJamie Shaul scores Hull FC's second...and the conversion brings it up to 18 - 12.

Posted

Early in the second half Rovers win a penalty and Travis Burns stretches the lead to 20 - 12.

Rovers kick from their own half and Crookes knocks on to give the Robins an attacking scrum 30 metres out. They dart from side to side, but can't find a way through,..Hull pick up a stray pass and they're up to the 20 metre line.

Jason Crookes is red-carded for a shocking high tackle and Hull will be struggling from here... and Ave Gardner scores in the corner for Rovers

You can hear the shouts from here, and I reckon Arsenal have just scored at Wembley.

But Houghton has scored from dummy half for 12-man FC with his first touch of the ball.

And again Hull break. Desperate passing and a break down the wing - a despairing pass inside as the winger is tackled driifts forward and Rovers bring the ball back.

FC attack again, they win a penalty and Falae'asena (?) drives through the Rovers defence and across the try line, he rolls and touches down the ball. The conversion makes it 26 24 but Hull FC still one man short from an earlier red card.

Apparently it's 2-2 at Wembley in the roundball final.

Hull defend heroically to keep Rovers out on their try line, but can't drive the ball down the pitch. Sixteen minutes to go... 26 - 24.

Sustained pressure is too much for 12-man Hull, and Ave Gardner scores int he corner...

Posted

And as full time draws near, Hodgson scores for Rovers to make it 36 - 26 with a conversion to come followed by the final whistle, Crookes' sending off (clearly justified) the turning point that saw Rovers pull away again from a resurgent Hull FC side.

Haway thair Cowboy, Ah tought ye were gaun'tae miss the kick-off

But where's Ray and Allan, Imam?

They're ower thair, oan the wireless, bytheway. Ye're as well stayin' heir, oan Eurosport.

And in the first couple of minutes, defences are on top. Warrington force a drop out after their first set of six, and then Siants push the Warrington ball carrier over the sideline. Saints are tremendously aggressive in defence. And shouts of "Waiyer Waiyer" ring round the Etihad Stadium. Warrington capitalise on a Sints error and they have their first promising attack of the match, CHris Bridge wins an extra yard or two. Back to zero, and Ormsby dives over in the corner - de doo de doo, de doo de doo. Dod dee dee doo, dee doo dee doo! Warrington pull in front, and Chris Bridge pulls it in front of the posts as well, and it's 4 - 0 Warrington.

And Warrington come back quickly from the kick off, and Rhys Evans puts Warrington 8 - 0 up! Another miss from Chris Bridge will be bringing down his 91% average to date

Warrington tap a penalty to get within five metres of the Saints line after two tackles but saints stand firm. Last tackle, and saints drop on the ball in the field of play. Can Saints get in to an attacking position ? No, the kick falls into the arms of Ormsby and Monaghan brings the Wire over the centreline. Matty Russell spins in the tackle but gets the ball away, the kick goes up and Lomax takes the ball but he's tackled five metres from his tryline. Great tackling round the legs by Warrington pinning Siants back in their own half.

Warrington attack the Saints line, the ball spins wide and Rhys Evans can't get to the pass on the wing and it goes out of play for a let-off to Saints. But Warrington steal the ball back, and Chris Hill claws his way through to place the ball over the way and the Warrington fans are on their feet "Doo de doo doo, de doo, Doo de doo doo, dee doo!"

Did ye see whit the Tigers dun tae Wakefield, bytheway, Cowboy?

Bit of a mauling, from what I saw on the BBC. Castleford 50 - 12 Wakefield. I'm frightened to go to the fridge for another can.

Aye, ye're right thair, Cowboy. Tiger bottle can, can cannot.

Warrington win a penalty and attack again. The ball goes behind Scotland hero Matty Russell, but he turns and drops on the ball, Rhys Evans goes over but Phil Bentham refers it to Ian Smith and Ben Thaler in the video ref's box. I have to say that the coverage of the video refs has eliminated a great deal of speculation from the game - perhaps the financial markets might like to take notice. And Ian Smith says Try time!"/ Let's hope I can chance my arm with the Tigers in the fridge without ending up on a mauling like Trinity received....

Ryan Atkins flicks the ball back for the supporting players, but it's too quick for Rhys Evans and he knocks on to give Saints their first real attack... Dawson touches down but it's knocked on after some mishaps and Warrington take it away from the scrum.

Saints defuse a Warrington attack and Turner breaks on the wing but the pass drifts forward and the primrose and blue are bouncing on the terraces.

A high kick and Monaghan tackles him, but who's there adding weight to the tackle? BENNEEE!

But Saints break - a great kick, Ormsby lands on the Saints chaser who takes the ball off him, and holds him down for a second (penalty) - two seconds (yellow card) and Ormsby runs off to the naughty chair.

Saints attack and a pass to the wing drifts forward and Saints are denied a try in the corner.

Handbags break out as Saints are awarded a scrum in the Warrington 20. Turner is held up a metre out, but Walmsley slices through under the sticks - surely WAR 18 - 6 STH?

And Saints are defending like - like Terriers and the half ends 18 - 6

Posted

Messrs Rooney and French, over on the Wireless side of the stadium, are a few minutes ahead ot those of us on the Eurosport side, and I can't help thinking that they give a better picture of the game than the magic of television can ever hope to achieve, Anyway, there is drama in the opening minutes of the second half as Ohaiha flicks the ball back and Monaghan picks it up, Warrington break, Evans scoots down the wing, passes into Ryan Atkins who pops the ball down behind the posts. Ormsby is anxious to get back from the sin bin, and if it carries on like this much longer, Warrington are bound to take an optimistic view. Matty Russell IScotland hero) breaks and he;s tackled, plays the ball quickly and Joel Monaghan scores. If this was Wire - Wigan we'd call it a hyoomilliyiashun!

Still plenty ae' time thair, Cowboy. The bigger the heid, the bigger the erse, eh?

And Warrington are "taking Saint Helens apart" as Matty Russell takes a Ratchford unload and breaks to score. Thaddeus will be glad he had an early night tonight....

WAR 36 6 StH and if it carries on like this much longer, Saints will be struggling

Saints attack the Wire line but the pass does not go to hand, Wire hold them out, the ball flies out to the other wing and Jordan Turner rolls over the line and he's scored for Saints

SC

Posted

Soliola breaks, he's halted, plays the ball and at the next play Paul Wellens goes in on the corner with a man to spare to make it Warrington 36 - 18 after the conversion.... 20 minutes to go....

Walsh gets it to Ohaia to Wellens and Warrington defending desperately

and successfully

And then Saints break again, and win a penalty, but Wellens is stifled by Bennee! Westwood; another penalty to Saints.... Wire defend and Saints are held up. Saints attack again, and win another set of six,,,,and eventually Matty Dawson scores in the corner - can the Wire hold on? Walsh's kick narrows the score to 36 - 24

Warrington attack again, and the ball comes back to Matty Russell, to Stefan Ratchford, and off his boot between the posts to take Warrington three scores clear...

Then Joel Monaghan breaks to extend the lead by another four points and with only six minutes to go, Warrington could be forgiven a little cheerful optimism.

SC

Mackinson dives down the wing but Russell holds him up and rips the ball

And that;s the way the game ends - Warrington 41 - 24 Saint Helens

Great result ... Warrington is now my default team once if Wakefield fades from view.

Also, just a heads up - the first State of Origin is on this Wednesday ... just thought I'd share that here first because your fan base may be interested.

My apologies - the televised games this weekend were on past my bed-time. I'd half intended to get home in time to catch it on the wireless, but I got distracted by the Thomas Cup in Sid's. so I missed Wakefield 4 - 36 Warrington.

In the third set of fifth match, Japan beat Malaysia by four points to lift the Thomas Cup 3-2, after putting out five-times consecutive holders China in the semi-finals. Badminton, by the way.

I'll record State of Origin, and if it's level going into the third match, I might knock off work early to catch the last game.

Live on Eurosports, 0200 am Saturday morning Friday night, Warrington v Leeds. If you can't get up for that, you're wasting your money with Viagra

Edit: I've set to record, just in case...

Bradford - Wakefield on Sunday 9 pm THAI (not on Eurosport) may prove to be decisive in the battle for relegation. Bradford have clawed their way up to zero (Nul points, as they say in France) while Wakefield are on 8 pts ahead of them. London still languish without a point to their name, as they travel to Hull this weekend

I'm not going to stay up for the Huddersfield v Wigan game. I might get up early for the Warrington game on Friday night, and then stay up and go for a bike ride, but it's a long couple of hours between when the game finishes and it gets light here (7 am, more or less) - maybe I could go for a swim, or something, and then sleep through the heat of the mid-day sun. I don't know - in this life, anything is possible.

Team news here: http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/rugby-league/27587641

A win will see them still a point behind Leeds, but with a game in hand. Leeds travel to the Haliwell Jones to meet Warrington tomorrow night - I'll maybe get up for that, so to speak, but I'll watch a recording of the Wigan game.

Bad news, David - Bradford move onto positive points with a 20 - 12 home win against Wakefield Trinity Wildcats; and they're appealing the six point penalty gor going into administration, which, if successful, would see them level with Wakefield in the race to avoid relegation next year, when the league shrinks to 12 teams

SC

Posted

*sigh*

Does the appeal have a good chance of being upheld?

Any 'soft' teams for Wakefield to play in the final rounds?

Thanks for the updat.

Leeds - Leigh is on live; Widnes - Keighley is on delayed around dawn on Saturday, Wigan - Castleford is not on live on Saturday night ... the online schedule didn't stretch to Sunday, so I don't know what time it's on, nor whether Bradford - Warrington will be on live; if not, I might listen on the wireless, I should be home by that time, I think.

I worked for some time in the 'Pinder of Wakefield' Pub on Greys Inn Road, Kings Cross, London.

http://pubshistory.com/LondonPubs/StPancras/PindarofWakefield.shtml

Brings back fond memories.

Met the Pouges there (numerous times).

So, since it was the 'Wakefield' ... just a sentimental attachment ... I've never been there.

Bob Dylan played his first ever gig there and Oasis also ... http://www.londonremembers.com/memorials/dylan-s-first-uk-venue

I knew none of this when I worked they ... was just an Aussie working in a Pub ... nice feeling to it though.

Later I used to live up the road from the Arsenal Football ground (the old venue) when it was near Highbury and Islington ... but, by then, I'd picked my teams to like, such as Man U, Spurs, Crystal Palace, Wolves etc

I better stop now others we might be considered to be 'off topic' and incur the wrath or 'you know who' ... w00t.gif

Looking ahead to the weekend, I can't see Leigh prevailing against Leeds, nor Keighley against Widnes.

I agree Wigan - Castleford will be the closest game, but I reckon Wigan's big game temperament will see them through

and I reckon Warrington will overpower Bradford.

I'm not going to get home in time for the Warrington game, unfortunately, so I'll miss the lot
