Monk glues his eyes shut

BANGKOK: -- An elderly Thai monk accidentally glued his eye shut when he mistook a tube of super glue for eye-drops, media reports said on Monday.

Monk Prapatworakhun, 81, who is now undergoing treatment at Angthong Hospital, 110 kilometres from Bangkok, said he accidentally took the Super Glue from his temple's drug cabinet while looking for eye drops to relieve a severe eye itch on February 17.

"I squeezed out several drops on the floor and saw a clear liquid, so I put four drops into each eye," Prapatworakhun told The Nation newspaper from his hospital bed.

"In about a minute, my eyes felt cold and then sealed closed," said the monk.

someone once told me that super glue was developed by the us army for quick sealing wounds - I've no idea if that's true. He was an unreliable source. And I imagine that if it were true, the glue has changed in the years since.

That is very true and has been developed further and is in regular use in NHS hospitals as it leaves less scaring than stitches and can seal clean cuts such as razors with less wound pinching. Must add that this is medical grade glue and not the same as the stuff you buy in hardware shops

Monk gets his sight back

An elderly monk who accidentally glued his eyes shut with super glue had sight restored to his right eye yesterday after doctors successfully performed surgery on him, an eye specialist at Angthong Hospital said.

Dr Banjob Nimitpornsukho said Phra Khru Prapatworakhun, 81, abbot of Wat Mathuros in Muang Angthong district, had his sight restored after a two-hour operation using acetone solvent to remove the glue without harming the cornea.

Doctors will operate tomorrow on his left eye, which is still tightly sealed by the glue, he said.

Phra Khru Prapatworakhun hurt his eyes last week when he accidentally used super glue to soothe an irritation instead of eye drops.
