My wife doesn't know allthough she seems to think the habit originated when someone offered red Fanta and then won the lotto!

All she knows is it's about good luck.

Tricky one this, but in the Thai Buddhist belief system there is a female deity which has a beckoning hand (which is invisible because she is a spirit/ghost) and this female form likes red sweet Fanta, along with flowers and a little food.

This brings good luck to the bar by attracting customers in.

According to the Cocacola web site Fanta was introduced in the early 40s. H.M. Rama V passed away in 1910. :)

Meaby because red fanta is so awful to drink, as it's hard to finish the stock, they put it in temple

I have seen green offered on many occasions too, whats the difference btw, they both taste the same!

As I said in post # 2. The colour is irrelevent. The Fanta is chosen because it is considered the sweetest drink. Some female bar workers consider red to be sweetest, others the green.

Syd, are you from Pattaya?

We're talking offerings, spirit houses, and you bars?

OK, the girls do it too, but there is a wider world!

Red seems to be Rama V's colour.

My wife always says buy red roses for Buddha, but it seems to be for him.

Looks like kind of a John Lennon / Jesus thing.

yes funny that, it more often than not seems to be red fanta,....Perhaps(and only perhaps) it might have something to do with blood red...???

Fanta was a bigger seller in Mexico than the USA. As for color vs. flavor, the flavor called 'cream soda' in northern USA - clear - is "Big Red" in Texas - sickeningly sweet.

Added: the syncretist Catholic/Mayans in Chamula (Chiapas, Mexico) worship using Pepsi, which makes better belches.
