Army Major, Accomplice Get Death Sentence

Featured Replies

An Army major and an accomplice in a drug racket were sentenced to death Tuesday for killing two anti-narcotics policemen in a much-publicised shootout at a Bangkok apartment complex two years ago.

Major Chanon Chinnawong and Withoon Niyakij had been sentenced previously to 58-year prison terms each for possessing a large number of ice and ecstasy tablets, both for their own use and with intent to sell. They had also been fined Bt3.6 million for possessing the tablets.

A third accomplice in the racket, Sukhum Juajaemjan, was acquitted of killing the two policemen, but was jailed yesterday for ten years, for possessing firearms and war weapons. He had been sentenced previously to two prison terms 15 years for drug possession and 18 months for producing and using false documents.

Good - I hope for once the authorities follow through with the sentance and don't commute it (which is probably what will happen).

Something gives me the feeling that the fine is not likely to be paid .
