Sohpon acts to prevent airport scams

Writer: BangkokPost.com

Published: 22/07/2009 at 05:09 PM Transport Minister Sohpon Zarun on Wednesday ordered Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) to step up measures at Suvarnabhumi and other airports to prevent extortion scams.

Mr Sohpon gave the order during his inspection trip to Suvarnabhumi airport after a British couple clamed they were the victims of an extortion scam after being accused of shoplifting from a duty free shop. The couple's claim was reported by the BBC.

The transport minister was also said to have been criticised by Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva for failing to keep the airport to international standards.

Usual BS, will clamp down for a few weeks, and then it will be back to normal, too many people in important positions feasting off these scams. Just a case of needing to be seen to do something in light of the King Power scam.

Is it July again already? Then yes, it is time for the airport crackdown, makes an impressive headline, although the one a few years back was more convincing. So then we have the August drug crack down, then the September illegal workers, and the October...

The only thing that annoys me at Sawanaphumi is the Taxi touts and the taxi setup in general. The whole system of taxis at the airport needs urgent attention.

PS. Don Mueng had a better Taxi service!

It is way smarter to make a public announcement and the airport is cleansed instantly, with zero arrests, than to go

thru all the pushups of actually arresting folks. Now the perps can all rest at home until the next sig-alert.

Of course he can report back that there was no real problems there, that the only folks that were apprehended were

some English douches lifting expensive, counterfeit wallets. Hahh!! Stupid they aint!!

This is a different from the supression of illegal taxis starting last June 24th.

Illegal taxis at airport to be suppressed

BANGKOK, 17 June 2009 (NNT) – The Airports of Thailand (AOT) will suppress illegal taxis operating inside Suvarnabhumi International Airport.

Deputy-Director of Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Wing Commander Pratheep Wijittho, said that AoT was preparing to train staff from every unit including police officers from Racha Thewa Police Station, Special Operation Police Division, Tourist Police Division, Land Transportation Department, and 250 security guards at the Airport.

They would also survey the area inside the passenger building in order to prepare the prevention and suppression plan for the illegal taxis and guides.

The operation would start on June 24.

Obviously that was a huge success. :)

It's great if they actually do something, though it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth that the catalyst for this was two people who paid a bribe to avoid jail time after being caught stealing.

If you don't take the overpriced AOT "Limo" then you will be subjected to abuse by the thugs/touts.

Hmmm.

I think they like it that way.

35,000 arrivals a day, paying 900bt instead of 300bt.

Nice little earner for some AOT officials, no?

Eject the taxi touts on the 28th, they'll be back on the 29th.

Let political shit stirrers over run the airport.

Sue KP for millions sometime this century.

Etc etc etc

AOT are a effen joke.

Hi All.

I think it is time to have a good look at the Thai police force, And starting at the top move a lot of officers of all ranks sideways , down, and just plain sacked. I doubt it will happen but it has to be cleaned up ,So might as well start now.

Now that they're cracking down on mafia runned taxis, why don't they do a crack down on King Power?

If you have 5 groups involved in the crack down, who is watching the 5 groups and where is King Power going to enter the 'big picture'? If Thailand wants to get the spotlight off of the scams, clean them up once and for all, put people in the monkey house (not inactive posts) give rewards to the whistle blowers (police/drug enforcement get a portion of fines/seized goods/properties) Put mr Tony under police interrogation in Puket with names, amounts, etc released to the International press (they are the ones who put Thailand in the fish bowl) Like one man said " I have a dream" look what happened to him.
