Hi there,

Allow me to explain my situation. My wife and i are both Singaporeans living in Bangkok.I am on a work permit, and she is on a visa. She is pregnant and we are planning to give birth in Thailand.

May i ask, will my child automatically be a Thai citizen? And will my child get the same privilegs as the thais, given the fact that both parents are not?

Thank you and hope to get some advice from anyone.

Cheers.

์No, it's not automatic. In fact it's very difficult to get the Thai citizenship when both parents are foreigner even the legally stay one.

This policy come from the situation of regional conflict when there were millions of refugee in TL.

Sorry I don't know the facts about Thai citizenship. I just wondered what kind of privileges you were thinking of as a Thai?

:) Reading TV you should know that expat is 4th class resident in TL. :D

No, your child won't be granted Thai nationality. Only those born to one Thai parent, or two foreign parents who both have PR, are eligible to get Thai citizenship. I don't know Singaporean citizenship law at all, but I suspect your child will automatically be a Singaporean citizen at birth due to your nationality.

Walking very slowly down the street, pissing off the farang walking behind me with my slowness. Immensely gratifying and rewarding.

I was born here and have lived in Bangkok for over 20 years of my life. My parents are both German, so I wasn't eligible for Thai citizenship. Not that it really matters to me.

No.

Not a citizen, no benefits.

All these replies are quite certain that Thai citizenship is not automatic. I can't argue because I don't know, however I am somewhat suprised.

The child will surely have a Thai birth certificate, and if the child's parents do not register their child in their home country, from an international perspective, the child is Thai.

It would be interesting to see if an adult person with a Thai birth certificate could apply for a Thai passport, on the grounds of the birth certificate alone.

Dttk?

A Thai birth certificate will state on it the nationality of the child. If inegligble, the cerficiate will state in Thai "not eligible for Thai citizenship"

With a birth certificate stating you are Thai, then yes, of course it is easy to get a passport at any age.

then you may, or may not, be interested to know that 2008 amendments to the Thai nationality act opened up the possibility for those born on Thai soil to foriegn parents, to aquire Thai citizenship if born between 1972 and 1993. The main criteria is if they show an ongoing link to thailand during this time.

Those born before 1972 on Thai soil, are Thai citizens automatically regardless of the continuting links to Thailand, or their parentage.

I did not know that! I'm not really interested still unless I could get dual citizenship, which I don't think they allow in Germany.

No, Germany doesn't allow duel citizenship, TL does.

My friend in the Thai MFA told me he has done a lot of paper work for many Thai girls who married Germans to abandon Thai citizenship.

dunno about german citizenship, but I seem to recall that if you are born with both, it may be OK in keeping both? I could be wrong!

Can say for sure. But, probably not.

I believe Samran is correct. There is a big difference between opting voluntarily for German nationality and having it by way of birth.

But I would ask the German embassy to be sure.
