Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra was not behind the plan to hold the nationwide celebrations to mark his 60th birthday tomorrow as speculated by the Democrats, Puea Thai Party MP for Bangkok Anudith Nakornthap insisted on Saturday afternoon.

Anudith also reaffirmed that the birthday parties for Thaksin were not initiated by the main opposition Puea Thai Party. “The celebration holding was initiated by the red-shirts who love the ex-premier. The red-shirts have constitutional right to hold any party. The celebration does not abuse other people’s right”, the Puea Thai Party MP said, adding that Thaksin has never learnt before that there would be a religious rites at Kaew Fah temple in Non Buri.

He was contacted by core leaders of the United front of Democracy against Dictatorship only for asking him to phone in to address his supporters in Bangkok and other provinces on Sunday because the red-shirts wanted to jointly celebrate the birthday party with him.

The Public Health Ministry has advised people with flu-like symptoms not to go to the 60th birthday party of ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra in Nonthaburi tomorrow due to concern about the spread of the A (H1N1) flu.

Crowded places were conducive to the further spread of the virus, so people in poor health should steer clear of the venue, according to Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai.

He said wearing face masks and adhering to hygiene guidelines would help reduce transmission of the virus for those who could not resist the urge to join the celebrations. ''Anyone with flu-like symptoms shouldn't join the bash. But if the urge is irresistible, wearing a face mask on going to the crowded area will cut the risk,'' Mr Witthaya said.

Govt scrambles to find Thaksin before his birthday phone-in

The government is again trying to find ousted prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra in the run-up to his phone-in address to supporters on his birthday on Sunday.

If Thaksin makes his phone call from Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, the Foreign Ministry will ask the Gulf state to honour its word that it will not allow Thaksin to agitate politically in the UAE, said Panich Wikitset, assistant to the foreign minister.

The UAE has promised to expel Thaksin and send him to Thailand if he is found in Dubai. The two countries do not have an extradition treaty, although there is a reciprocal arrangement that allows for the exchange of fugitives.

Big plans for birthday boy

Supporters of fugitive ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra all over the country today plan religious ceremonies and parties on a grand scale to celebrate his 60th birthday.

They plan to continue with their campaign to collect as many as 1 million signatures to seek a Royal pardon for Thaksin, in addition to offering food to monks across the country and holding black-magic rites to boost his luck and bring him back to Thailand.

Amarin Pachonyuth, chairman of People Who Miss Thaksin, said the club would organise a service for Thaksin at Wat Kaew Fah in Nonthaburi's Bang Kruay District attended by former Prime Minister Somchai Wongsawat, Thaksin's brother-in-law, and Yingluck Shinawatra, Thaksin's younger sister.

Amarin said those who attended would be moved to tears, but he refused to elaborate.

The red shirts in Buri Ram are expecting over 1,000 people at a religious service for Thaksin in Nang Rong district. Surasak Petsawang, the red-shirt leader, denied that they would hold a black-magic rite for Thaksin, saying there would be only prayer and a Buddhist service.

The Chiang Mai Lovers 51 Club will mobilise more than 10,000 supporters of Thaksin to celebrate with a religious service at Wat Phrathat Haripunchai in Lamphun's Muang district and a party at night at the Grand Warorot Palace Hotel, also in Muang district.

To commemorate the Buddhist Era year in which Thaksin was born, 2,492 cakes will be served and a 2,492-foot-long sheet of paper provided for supporters to write birthday wishes on, said Kanyapak Manichak, a local radio host better known as DJ Om.

They hope the paper will make the Guinness Book of Records.

The ex-leader is expected to make a phone-in address to his supporters at 9pm, Kanyapak said.

In Roi Et, a group that calls itself the Roi Et People Who Love Demo-cracy plans to hold a two-day and two-night black-magic rite at a market in Art Samart district aimed at boosting Thaksin's luck.

Chairman Wichianrachanin Sinthupria, said the group would solicit signatures from Thaksin supporters to seek a Royal pardon. He said leaders of the Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship (DAAD) led by Nattawut Saikua, Suthin Klangsaeng and Arisman Pongruangrong would be on stage.

He said the group would hold a bai si (rice-offering) rite to boost Thaksin's luck and morale because the ex-premier had visited Art Samart district to hear complaints.

Soil from eight places in which Thaksin camped out during that tour in January 2006 will be used in the rite.

The group said they would offer lunch to monks across the country at 11am and Thaksin would phone in at 8pm to his supporters, who would see him through video link.

Democrat Party spokesman Dr Buranat Samuttarak said the DAAD was within its rights to hold a |religious service for Thaksin but should not use the opportunity to solicit signatures for a Royal pardon because the Justice Ministry said that was unlawful as Thaksin had not served a jail term. He added that Thaksin's supporters should not widen divisions in the country.

In a related development, former Army chief General Sonthi Boon-yaratglin, who led a coup against Thaksin in 2006, said he saw the birthday celebration by Thaksin's supporters as a matter of faith in the ex-leader.

"There are people who love and have faith in him. It is a personal matter," he said.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, meanwhile, will monitor Thaksin's speech today in order to determine whether it contains improper messages directed at the monarchy or government, said Panich Vikitsreth, vice minister for foreign affairs.

If that is the case, the ministry will find which country it is being made from, Panich said.

"If it is found to be the United Arab Emirates, the ministry will instruct the Thai ambassador to remind the UAE of its promise not to let Thaksin use the country as a political base," he said.

"There have been no confirmed reports of Thaksin's whereabouts. We have learned only that he travels widely and it is likely that he will make a recording of the speech."

Relaunching Thaksin Shinawatra

We will do it the old-fashioned way - I'll keep updating this space and you keep refreshing your page. I have both twitter and facebook accounts but for now will let Thaksin Shinawatra boom ahead using the two social network channels. He announced the twitter and facebook plans on Friday and it caused quite a stir in our newsroom. Good old Thaksin. Catch him if you can.

Preamble: Michael, I know you are resting in peace, but if by any chance talks about your memorial service being overhyped have annoyed you, point your critics toward Thailand. Rub it in their faces by asking "Have I ever held a birthday party like that you sorry nitpickers?"

If this whole intro makes me sound like a big nitpicker myself, sorry. It's true that Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva launched his hi-5 account a few years ago and I didn't say a word. And there are the likes of President Obama when twitter is concerned. But trying to organise a birthday party of the century and promoting it this way three months after our close shave with a bloodbath? I guess we have the right to be a bit sceptical and anxious.

It is believed that Thaksin will use the occassion to repaint himself as a peaceful man now ready to forgive and forget.

That's the only strategy left apparently, after the Songkran turmoil damaged his pretty fine image overseas.

He became a tainted good, and a shrewd businessman like him always knows what to do with a tainted good. You don't throw it away. Just add a few new features and relaunch it.

Merit-making events will take place nationwide barring the South. What message he will convey to his supporters and how he will convey it have been a subject of speculation, thanks to his close aides' claims that there will be a "big surprise".

Rumours that he would appear in the form of a hologram have been dismissed but still persisted.

We expect some kind of video footages of him making merits in Dubai to be shown one way or another to his supporters to make them feel he is "there" with them.

Events will take place in about a dozen provinces, starting in the morning. Focus will be on the Kaewfah Temple in Nonthaburi, the Uthai-tharam Temple on the Rama IX Road and a public venue in Roi-et. And just because the whole thing is about relaunching a political product doesn't mean it won't be superstitious. Religious ceremonies, according to news reports, include using a holy knife to "cut" or remove karma from Thaksin. I must have been a bad Buddhist because this is the first time I know we can do that.

So, a rumoured hologram and a holy knife will make Sunday quite interesting, if not "exciting" as promised on Thaksin's twitter. My update will start around 10 pm so please stay tuned.

Not sure if the translation is right - Thais everywhere perform ceremonies/prayers for increasing their karma/luck - its normally translated as blessings or merit making, and is typically done on a birthday.

Thaksin is known for his faible for Astrological advise and to try to help his fortune with black magic -

it's simple he should only follow the advise of the Buddha, who says "Greed attracts bad fortune!"

oh i don't doubt he has done some things like this in his past, but the report is not about his past at all. It would be irresponsible for a newpaper to make a claim that Thaksin will have a black magic ceremony done on his birthday and not be able to back it up this claim, particularly if the organiser out and out denies it.
