A friend has kindly offered to install Windows 7 for me. Wonderful, except there would still be the same monkey behind the keyboard. Been reading a book recently (Planet Earth by Cessare Emiliani) which explains everything from quantum mechanics to the chemical compostion of diamonds and gems. Well, I was wondering, can anyone recommend a book along similar lines on a silicon level. It's actually becoming a tad embarrassing having to call in help 'cause I can't get a camera to work or simply looking blank when computer jargon enters a conversation.

most computer books are about specific subjects so you need to focus on what you want to learn

a good publisher is wiley which produce a series called "for dummies" so you have titles like win xp for dummies etc

the problem would be getting hold of the book in thailand but you could purchase electronic versions (pdf) or order from amazon

good luck

they are available in Bangkok i.e. @ Asia Books, or Emporium (3/fl ?) - there's one of the largest book stores (with a well stocked English language computer section).

Siam Paragon is another place to go.

Thank you for the replies. I thought it would be rather a long shot as the 'all-encompassing' style of book I was hoping to find wouldn't appeal to those with the knowledge most who contribute to a computer forum would have. Living on Koh Samui makes the general browsing impossible whilst looking through Amazon (will be ordering some more books in about a month) very time consuming, and fruitless so far

On the contrary....I could nicely disagree in reference to how helpful the 'For Dummies' series might be. These guidebooks tend to be extraordinarily general and broad to the point of being not useful. There are plenty of more specific sources and material quite available. Naturally, ordering online would be their best bet, as such material would be limited {English} in LOS.
