I can imagine the reaction of Tourists and Thais alike if anyone attempts to introduce Israeli style Airport Security Checks at Suwannaphum!

actually security here goes very fast and efficiently:

when u go to departures, u go thru prelimanary scan and personl checking and yes they do profile unlike in the states; then your luggage gets scanned and depending on your destination, where u came from, how u seem to act or if u cant answer questions in a normal fashion, your luggage gets searched. gone are the days of getting almost strip searched unless u have been profiled or your travels in past have taken u to profiled countries...you also dont get taken to a separate room but there are special set ups for doing the luggage search thing... a person going to a special room usually means he is on the security list or problem travel papers or coming from profiled areas....

it took my husband and i 15 minutes to go thru security; and he is thai, so i had to answer his questions, and in addition we got a trainee who came over to practice the questioning again... since i am a patient person, the trainer thought i would be a good canditate for training the trainee on. they are trained in reading body language, eye motion, listening to the language spoken that can cue them in as to locale, etc.

its the training that the workers receive that actually make it good security, not the security equipment. they rely on human interaction/detection . i know several people that worked as the security folks, they dont just take anyone; and its a high prestige job that lots of 'just released from army' kids apply for, preference to those that came from certain units in the army, or who were commanders/officers in the army; cant imagine it in thailand, as the turnover is high, and so is the pay. and i think the thai army system is different as well, not sure they would fit the bill for airport security. hoping my daughter would apply next year; its a great job and opens doors to many possibilities afterwards.

those that have all their paperwork/passports tickets organized, answer clearly and do not answer with stupid remarks (yeah that s really a bomb boom boom... ) go thru quickly. even those with 'minority' status that are organized and answer w/o getting their knickers in a twist go thru quickly.

but also, we are used to security checks everywhere, daily, at bus stations train stations malls, whatever, so we are compliant and 'trained' in our responses (opening bags, cell phones, whatever out of pockets, all ahead of time, we dont waste time argueing like tourist do (do i look like a terrorist? etc cause security folks are trained to lose their sense of humour and to not reply nor speak unneccessarily- they are polite but firm) , or forgetting the metal key ring in a pocket...

would have liked to have been there yesterday to see the 'field trip' :))

Laughable ..... do you guys know what Isreali airport secuirty is like??

The logistics are nightmarish - its taken them 20years plus to get the system working as well as it does - and work it does, make no mistake about that, but I just can't imagine in month of Sundays ( a year of Sundays) the Thai's been able to run an Isreali type operation from the new Bkk airport.

First of all, its not needed, second of all as Bina says above in her comments, its integrity lies in its personel and I somehow don't feel that that attitude is ingrained in the personel at the new airport - there are constant reports of "incidents", some we here of, many we don't.

I whole culture change would have to take place - and takes generations to change.

I wish them luck ... and tourists lots and lots of patience and tolerence!
