The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning people that alcohol-based hand gel used to kill germs remains inflammable until it dries.

Hand gel is 70% alcohol, a highly inflammable substance, FDA secretary-general Dr Pipat Yingseree said on Thursday.

People who apply it should not light cigarettes or get close to flames or hot surfaces until they are absolutely certain it has dried.

Hand gel with 70% alcohol is normal throughout most of the travel industry now.

The advantage with the alcohol is not only the disinfective, but also the fact that it evaporate from the hands almost instantly.

So unless one uses a lighter at the exact same time, its not a problem.
