I am looking to buy some computers, or the component parts to build the computers myself, from BKK, or elsewhere such as a reliable shop chain. I am not looking to buy or build top of the range units, just reasonable, working units. (Not laptops).

Something along the lines of :-

160 GB HD.

2 MB Ram (minimum)

Decent, mid range graphics card.

Processor 2 ghz minimum - Prefer AMD.

Basic tower.

Reliable motherboard - for AMD chip.

CD/DVD combo

LCD screen

LAN Card

Reliable keyboard + mouse.

On-board sound is OK

(No floppy required)

Also a 10 port router and decent headphones.

Anyone know of a decent place to buy? Heard a lot of bad reviews about Pantip Plaza, so not too sure about them.

Also what sort of cost per unit these days?

Any relevant info welcome.

Thanks.

Those are very low specs by today's standards. The best place for computer hardware, in my opinion, is still panthip plaza. From a glance I'd say your machine could come for something like 17,000 baht. It's possible that the graphics card will be low end, like the rest of the gear, but you can easily upgrade that yourself. I highly recommend the 4870.

Edit- Router and headphones, especially if decent, can run you 4000-5000 baht together. My advice would be, however, to just put the thing together yourself. You could start looking in www.thanni.com to get an idea of how much you'd be paying per piece. Pantip prices are a bit lower than that site's quotations if you find the right stores :) Good luck.

I you are looking for a reasonable computer for everyday use, I would recommend a computer with these specs

•Intel® G31 Express Chipset

•HDD 320GB SATA II 7200RPM

•RAM 2GB DDR2 800 Up to 4 GB

•Super Multi SATA Drive 22X

•PCIEX ATI Radeon HD4350 512MB DDR2 64BIT

•Integrated Sound System 8 CH High-Definition Audio CODEC

•Multi-in one card reader

•Integrated 10/100 Ethernet

•Internal modem 56k

•Multimedia Keyboard, Optical Mouse, Speaker

•Case : Micro ATX (Power supply 300Watt)

•18.5" W LCD Monitor

This computer cost 16,990 .- (Ex. VAT) and include a LCD monitor. The computer "Brand" is Lemel and is very good value for money. All the components inside are good brands, like seagate, Asus, Intel and ATI. You can put more memory in for no money.

has anyone bought anything from www.thanni.com? are they reliable? I find that the prices that they offer are way lower than those in Pantip.

I've heard they're reliable, and relatively fast. The problem is they don't give phone support, so if it hits the fan you're stuck with e-mails. Haven't heard any horror stories though. I use the site as a price gauge and go buy my stuff at panthip (which is usually a bit cheaper if you find the right places). Which items in particular do you find more expensive at panthip?

@G54,

JIB Computer has a number of branches throughout the country, if you like buying things in person and know exactly what you want, JIB is a good choice. I don't believe they have a branch in Nakhon Sawan though.

BTW, I have bought many computer components and accessories in Pantip Plaza(in person) over the last 6-7 years and have never had a problem.

@Pasmedrachma,

It is possible that Thanni has recently changed ownership. I think it is too soon to know if the "new" Thanni is dependable or not. Maybe order a single item and let us know how their service is?

In addition to JediCool, I can also recommend TK Computer for ordering by e-mail.

I have used both JediCool and TK Computer for purchases and have been satisfied.

If you order something from JediCool by e-mail, make sure you also telephone them soon afterwards to confirm the order--it seems the person who answers the emails sometimes doesn't coordinate with the other staff for delivery. But if you confirm by telephone everything will be promptly done.

I haven't had this occur with TK Computer, everything has been transacted by emails.

JediCool, and TK Computer are based in Pantip Plaza.

JIB is based in Zeer Rangsit, but has a big branch in Pantip as well.

Their prices are very competitive and it will come down to specific product selection as to who to choose for what component of the PC.

Just bought for the office a new comp with a whopping 22" screen @ 14,000 Baht in Tukcom Pattaya.

At first I also thought of buying components and built it myself, but the price for putting it all together was marginal so I saved my time and let them do it. In the end I didn't care much about the features but bought 2 gig of memory and a Dual Core AMD. Other than that for office application any computer on the market does the trick.
