I have been looking at some home video surveillance programs to install on my PC , finding the software is not a problem, and most of the programs allow you to use a wired external USB web camera , my problem is that when I connect my external web camera to the PC , the software recognizes the web camera , but the picture is blank ( black screen ) , I have tried a few different USB external web cameras, and the results are all way's the same, a blank screen. I am now wondering if the distance the web camera is away from the PC makes any difference , the web cameras ive been trying are all on USB extension leads , taken to the out side of my house and the distance is about 15 foot . When I connect the web camera using its supplied small 2 foot USB cable , the software screen shows the picture ok, I can't see how the software programs say's use a USB web cam , if you can't connect it over a long distance

Any thoughts Guy's

I had the same problem. I lowered the resolution in the software and it came up.

Hi, How far was your USB webcam from the PC, if my problem is to do with the length of the extension USB cable I am using, and like trogers

commented , a '' repeater cable is needed '', I wonder if the problem is also to do with the USB supply voltage not being enough for the length of the USB extension cable , could I some how use a powered USB hub to increase the USB voltage , its just a thought as I don't ever remember seeing

a USB repeater cable on sale at my local IT Mall , but plenty of powered USB hubs.

A USB Hub can also be used with normal USB cables, if you have multiple devices connected over 5 feet away. If it is only one device, a repeater cable is cheaper.

A repeater cable is an extension USB cable with a built-in repeater.

Both a Hub or a Repeater will buffer the signals to syn timing.

Hi, Thanks for your quick reply its appreciated , finding a repeater cable in my area I think will be a problem, so the USB powered hub option was just a thought , does the repeater cable some how amplify the signal as well as the supply voltage ..?

I think there are, but you will need hardware and software to process wireless signals of differing frequency at the same time. A domestic router operates at a fixed frequency and cannot do it.

Yes - there are many wireless IP cameras available. Each one gets allocated a different IP address, so you can have as many as you like connected to your wireless router.

I think the most popular ones in Thailand are D-Link and Level-One (both branded Vivotek cameras). There is a company in Bangkok that provide a web platform that records from the cameras instantly when your burglar alarm is activated :)

I think these are security cameras and not webcams, and prices will be high.
