That is wishful thinking…and I am not aware yet of any Fossil Fuel Powered Bike to run without oil.

But I tried it…not that I wanted it , but here it goes:

I went on the side-of-the-road-shop to get some oil changed as I just looked ( and found the oil to be low and darkish) as i was a bit out of town so I let the side –of-the-road-shop-guy(“specialist” mechanic as I keep meeting here) give me some new oil….bad thing I didn’t check the guy and he filled far too low ( yes a stupid mistake from my side – trusting somebody for something simple like changing oil).

So I went on for about a week (not knowing that I had less than a third of the oil I was supposed to have)and than I had on about 105km/h some fading power and finally the engine almost stalled …after a restart I had a much noisier engine and very weak power….and a noise that reminded on metal rubbing on metal…it was just a short distance from home…so I went slowly back home with my “sick” Tiger Boxer .

First thing at home I grabbed the Phone and informed Khun Pariya ( Rep from Tiger Motors)of the problem told him all I knew…next day they came to my Home (240 km from bkk!) and picked up the Bike…and took the Bike to their factory (in samut prakarn) to make a complete check-up and fix.

First thing they found in the factory was that the oil level was the problem ...so i expected to pay for all the repairs - even though there is a guarantee on Tiger Bikes ( 3yrs or 30000 km)

Saturday I got it back with the problems all fixed and damaged parts being replaced with new ones( yep the engine was damaged, as any other engine would have without getting the oil it needs, and therefor things replaced to new ones) …also since tiger keeps updating the boxer the new updates were also applied on the bike ( this included a new cylinder for the back brakes, a better mount for the exhaust and a damper in the Console to avoid vibrations & possible rattling) also a new Windshield was sent as mine was too low .

My Tiger Boxer 250 Rs came back all in perfect state….since it was my mistake I was prepared to pay for any damage and even offered it to Khun Pariya from Tiger Motors.

The total repair cost was 0,- (zero!!!) THb including pick-up, drop-off( thats 240 km x 2 ), service, new parts, and updates plus the windshield!!! This was a great surprise from Khun Pariya & Tiger Motors !

I am in no way affiliated to Tiger and would like to thank Khun Pariya & Tiger Motors for their great service & efforts !

To those who are critical on service matters and quality over Tiger Bikes this should give you a better understanding and it is also not a good idea to compare Tiger Bikes being same as Platinum or JRD because Tiger Bikes and their Service are far better- and remember , just because you haven’t known the brand Tiger before doesn’t mean it’s bad! Nor does Tiger Bikes have shortcomings to the Japanese branded bikes such as Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki or Kawasaki ..in fact I would like to see a service as I just received from these Japanese Brands.

Nice story to read of what appears to be service above and beyond.

Wifey is pushing me ever so gently towards a boxer after I showed her pics of the new 650 Ninja followed by letting her know the price.

The least I can do is pay the factory a visit soon and have a look around I guess.

I read somewhere, kano's thread?, that they had a problem with the rear rack.

Has that been sorted out as any bike I do get will be fitted with luggage.

All right, I gotta chime in here. First, let me tell you that I have the Tiger 250RS demo bike for the 2nd time, still with the same gearbox issues. So first off let me ask you if you have had any gearbox issues and also how many km's on your bike now?

Next let me say that there is one shortcoming that Tiger has over the other quality brands mentioned, and that is the price! I like the bike a lot, but have been disappointed about the transmission problems. Based on what I keep hearing you say about the service you are receiving, I just can't go wrong buying one of these bikes when I get back to LOS.

So thanks for that little piece. I like it when somebody else will take responsibility for my F'ups.

How about that new speedo? How do you like it? How much did they charge you?

Hi John,

The gearbox isn't a problem at all (ok i want a 6th gear :-) ..) , but the clutch neads to "wear in" at the beginning after the first 1000 km you will have it just fine.

Let me guess, your clutch wasn't right adjusted and resulted the problems on the gearchange?

The speedo what i have is the digital speedo and it was , if i remember correctly, 1400 Thb. I think it may become standard anyways in future, but you would have to check with khun pariya . I am very happy with this speedo as it does everything that is needed- it has a blue backlight and is easy to read at night it has a clock, fuel gauge, day counter, total counter and speed . RPM counter is not part of it and who needs it anyway...On the speedo you have the indicator, beam, highest gear light as well.

Hope that helps..and yes you can buy it .....

great bike, and great service for a great price...what more can you ask for??

Wow Mbox- Lucky you! That's pretty amazing that a company would offer warranty service for such obvious misuse. It's good for you, but if they keep it up they'll be out of business soon enough...

BTW, why did it take a week before you realized the oil was low? Doesn't your bike have an oil/engine warning light?

Happy Trails!

Yes, pretty amazing service . I don't think they'll be out of service ...there seems to be a lot of Boxers being bought from Police here...besides, they seem to establish their asian market too..ie Philippines,Japan ...

I have changed to a digital speedo console and i can't really recall if the old "original"one had an oil warning...this one doesn't have it..it wouldn't be really necessary if someone checks( i will do that in future :-) ).

Just was "flying' through the Boxers Owner Manual , it seems there is no oil warning light on the Boxers original console.

So the original and my new digital console don't show the oil level...a good point to suggest for the next generation of the Tiger Boxer....

Well... the Ninjette is the smallest bike I've ever owned, and it had an oil light-

What is the cost of a Tiger 250RS, and where is the dealership located (address, or, preferred, GPS coordinates)?

Wow, I would have paid the guys just for the collection and return a few grand. A BMW R 45 needed extensive engine work after being low on oil. Before riding a RD 350 YPVS for the first time, I filled up what I thought was the oil reservoir. turned out to be the gear box oil.

Bad move and I had to pay 1/4 the price of a new Tiger for my mistake in those days.

What was wrong? Major engine work needed? Piston & rings etc.? next time, DIY.

Hi Chris,

This was Khun Pariya's feedback as of what the problem was:

"The problem came from the engine oil which is less than it should be, which cause some damage in the piston and cylinder head"

and after thanking him & Tiger Motor for the excellent service they have done, i got this in reply:

"Dear "mbox"

No problem at all. It is our job. These feedbacks from you are helping us improve the bike. Thank you.

Best Regards,

Pariya"

If there is an award in Thailand for "great service" than they should get it!

I am impressed with the Tiger motor company. And I like their 250.

Does the engine have a little window in the sump? Thats a useful thing. Before you ride take a look at the oil level!

Hi there...i haven't seen any window in the sump either..but to take the oil "tester" out takes only 10 seconds so this is just fine...regardless i will do the recommendation to Tiger of either an oil control lamp or the little window...or both :-)

Most modern bikes have the amount of oil required molded into the engine next to the oil filler hole. So the clever way to change your oil is to empty it using the drain plug, and then measure the amount required before pouring it in. Some of the oil bottles you buy have a ml marker on the side; I keep these and then fill up to the required level (say 800ml), and then pour this in and it should be correct. Note that the size on the engine is assuming you are doing an oil change and you will need more oil if filling from a dry engine (eg rejust rebuilt or run dry); if so; fill it up with say 900ml, run it, drain it and then put back the required amount.

PS: Assume the boxer has the required amount of oil molded on the engine?

I can't think of very many vehicles with an oil "level" light. In fact I don't know of any, although they may exist. The light on most cars and trucks is a oil PRESSURE warning light. That is why they may stay on a couple seconds when an engine is started until the pressure triggers the switch. Usually when this comes on, after the engine is running, it means you are in deep trouble already. Check your level with a dipstick or a site glass.

My old Renault Fuego had an oil level gauge. Useful when I was too lazy to peak under the bonnet(hood).

hi,

I only can confirm the outstanding service from tiger. 25000 km on the clock and still going strong with a smooth gearbox.

I did daytrips from 850 km a day in all weather conditions without any hassle.

keep up the good work Tiger
