Replacing A Fan On A Laptop

Featured Replies

the fan on one of my older laptops have died or perhaps it just needs a good cleaning. i googled the manual and to take it apart is endlessly complicated so i plan to take it to either pantip or fortune town (any recommendations?) to have someone else do the work for me... how much should i expect to pay? the part that i need is listed on american sites for $30 usd, but that is obviously a BS price and i am sure its cheap here...

I would not be so sure as expect it may be a special order item rather than a genaric stock type used for any desktop (but I could be wrong - have not checked).

Because of the complexity of taking apart a laptop (along with the risk of breaking something) service charges tend to be a tad higher.

I reckon you'll pay between 1000 and 1500 Baht all in using Chinese knock of fans...

I would try to get the genuine part if you can, cheap chinese stuff just doesn't last. Chances are the fan has not failed anyway, may just need cleaning.

Did you run temp monitoring to see if its getting warm enough for it to even come on.  If your hearing a noise like a bad or dirty fan might make, don't be shocked if its really the HHD making the noise and is about to fail..  don't mean to scare ya, but I v seen that happen more often then a bad fan, and from inside a laptop the sound it makes you would swear it was the fan making the noise.  At least if it is the drive you can get a bigger one and its easier to change.  Maybe even cheaper then the fan problem.  Good Luck.

Be careful where you go. I paid a company in Plantip 1500 Baht to replace my laptop fan as the noise told me it was on its last legs. All they did was put some oil on the old one. 2 days later when I was back in Ubon I had the same problem, however until I can get a genuine repair a laptop cooling base is helping a lot.

Another tip is to put the vacuum cleaner to the fan vent and suck out any dirt or grime. This has also helped me.

Please post again with your experience. I have a Toshiba Satellite that needs the fan replaced and I've been putting it off after taking it to a couple of places in Chiang Mai. I can't remember how much they wanted but it was expensive.....
