The #1 question really though skipvice is:.......

IS THE GRASS GREENER ON THE OTHER SIDE?

Bye Bye to the original poster. When you come back don't post on this forum again! If you don't come back I assure you you won't be missed!

Would you be missed if you left? Im doubting any of us would in the greater scheme of things.

He is only giving his opinion on a Thai based forum about his experience of Thailand, and you obviously cant digest what he wrote .... as he commented that he is aware that if he doesnt like it he can leave ... it would seem thats what he is doing.

Yes. Allow him his opinion. Maybe he is not online. Not everyone can be all the time

I knew I would recive some flames on this post, that always happens on open forums. some good some bad.

Yes I will be missed by my wife,s family and several good friends I have made while living here. Been coming to thailand off and on sence 1967 and will keep coming back as often as I can, just do not want to live here anymore. Its not for me. :)

I left Bangkok on June 28th and am living back in the USA. I agree with Jingthing it's all about personal balance sheets and what you prefer. For me I could not be happier to be out of Thailand. I think Most places and namely Bangkok are absolutely filthy. Water, air and the liter everywhere makes it unbearable to me. Medical care is also half-ass at best though the hospitals are very impressive looking. I love Thailand for vacationing. But it is a country that is just too unreliable and behind the times for me to make it my full time home. I also had no problem finding a high paying job in the USA, unlike Thailand where it's 1 in a million.

The filthiness that you saw in Thailand as you put it would have been immediately apparent straight off the plane. One must wonder why you chose to live here in the first place? Buhmingrad Hospital I found efficient beyond belief. Sounds like you pulled the pin due to your failed attempt to sustain yourself and hey better to be comfortable in USA than a busted ass in BKK . Too many people come here with an impossible dream and end up burnt like wasabi but hey dont blame on the country its always the individual who fails due either to running away from their problems or not doing any research. Just look at all the "i wanna live in Thailand threads" 99% will post a similar one to wasabis within a year. Sure a lot of people dont adapt to culture and miss their family and friends however For the majority who leave its nearly always about the money although you will here every other excuse to justify but its always about the money in the end..

Make sure you come back in six months and give us an update on if things have changed for the better. I'm sure there's plenty more reading that are in the same boat as you. :D

When reading some of the full pro thailand comments here it makes me wonder what sort of shithole they left to find thailand so wonderful ! :)

NOBODY can tell what its like to live in another country with out trying it first, read all you want, if you beleive all you hear would you expect to see everyone with a gun and all women prostitites in thaialnd !,. ,..just because someone wants to leave a country dosent mean anything other than it dosent suit them the same reason i left the USA and Canada,in fact i was earning more there than in the UK,so it ( in my case) blows your money theory out of the water, and the reason that after 21years on and off im leaving thailand is i have a family and not coming from a 3rd world country i know where it suits us best, to each his own,.Thailand is ok for a holiday for singles, as for families there is zero to to,it all depends how you have lived and how you want to live,.i would like to add that i have quite a few friends that came to thailand once and hated it, as i said its all about what suits you, :)

I consider this coming and going of expats to and from countries as a normal thing. Everyone has different experiences and there is also the stage of life aspect. I think I would have hated Thailand in my 30s trying to build wealth but I think it is an excellent place to come with a pot of money to retire.

I have a relative who made a big drama about bringing a bunch of relatives from Russia to the US. None of them are very happy in the US and half of them moved back. C'est la vie! People don't need complex rationalizations for these kinds of decisions.

i reckon its also an "attitude" thing.

what is your basic "approach" or "attitude" to being in Thailand?

the ones who seem to survive the best have a "detached" attitude.

one way is to use your money as a weapon and insulator,

so you play the "big bwana" man and do everything your own way.

the following is a generalization with apologies to those who have manged to successfully "fit in".

i made the mistake of trying to be nice and "fit in",

this doesn't work because you are not wanted and/or you are resented.

(this becomes bluntly obvious when you make it clear that you are not a "bunny" and your ATM card is stuck fast in your wallet from lack of use).

then when you get so much cr*p shoved in your face you feel miserable coz you have really tried hard to be nice.

an attitude change can relieve this symptom.

so now i approach Thailand with,

"well if they are going to use me, then i will use them, for what i want, in any way i can"

let the games begin!

You are not considering the female factor. Take that away and I think there would be a lot less people here trying to convince themselves that it's so much better than their own home country's.

Ding! Ding! We have a winner!

I'm leaving Thailand(Samui) in 2 days after almost 2 years. I came for two reasons: the heat (for health) and low cost of living. The females are a bonus (unless you want good conversations - but that is another long thread someplace here). I love Thai food but was gaining weight eating all those carbs. I don't do business with anyone so that eliminates about half the problems people seem to have. I don't keep a Thai girlfriend for more than 9 hours so that eliminates about the other half. The beaches are postcard beautiful and I will miss the views. Insects, heat and reptiles don't really bother me because this is a tropical island after all. I love dogs so all the soi dogs around are fine by me.

What I won't miss about Samui: The dirty/murky sea (learn to dive and they take you all the way to Koh Tao for a reason). no major concerts or sporting events (that's why I got so excited about the regatta and I don't even sail). I like walking and this isn't the place to do it. I was in Singapore recently and I walked so much my legs felt like they would fall off but I enjoyed it all the same. I'm too young to have a "retired lifestyle" and the main local entertainment for single guys even gets old after awhile (still, it's nice to have it nearby just in case :) ).

I've made some good friends here and have never had a problem with any of the locals. Overall, I like Samui, just not enough to live here year around. 3-6 months a year might be just about right. I'll be back - probably sooner than I think.

Lies:

This is one that has been getting under my skin more than usual lately, why is it that so many people out here can't tell the simple truth even when the truth is not necessarily a bad thing. I just appears to be instinctive.

Well in this society is keeping "face" top priority, no matter what,

and lying isn't frowned upon - it's simply only not the truth!

in some aspects it is even considered "clever" see the Thaksin Affair..

Getting rich quickly is regarded "clever" too, no questions asked how!

the next thing what can bugger me is how people try to get onto the

"shoulders of others to expose themselves"....

There are some nasty intrigues going on specially if you part of a workforce

and there are some incompetent superiors, they will be a genuine marvelous,

pain in the neck... just for the sake of it - that the only thing which set's me off once in a while!

But try to keep reminding myself that this is only due to their humongous inferiority complex

combined with a survire profile neurosis towards us foreigners !

But in general this is all outweighed by the eternal, omniscient almost

"unbearable lightness of being" if you don't bother anybody, hardly anyone will bother you!

If I think back .... just buying a newspaper in the morning,

car parked, quick dash over in to the shop, back to the car and yes...

there she is filling in your ticket, handing it with a bright smile and a friendly "gooooood monin' sir.."

20 Euros later...automatic traffic surveillance cameras...inhuman tax system,

prices in general, cost of livin' compared to quality of life...

Not to mention the advantage of no frost, snow and ice... all year 'round...

ah well I could go on and on... as I mentined already above,

yes there are many shortcomings, but they are oversee able,

and way outdone by the advantages - "unbearable lightness of being"!

Whenever I get disgusted, I have an easy way to get back down to earth. A visit back to my home country makes me appreciate Thailand and overlook most things that irritate me here.

Poor medical care in Thailand? Obviously you have never had the insurance company in your home country tell you which hospital you can go to. If you were ever treated at Beverly hospital in Montebello, Kalifornia, you would be VERY grateful to use a Thai hospital.

This "Therapy" works very well with me too, usually once a year.Normally one month is enough.

Personally I think it is so clean now that it's lost half its charm. :D

I chose to live in Thailand to master the Thai language which I have. I had plenty of money and met my wife while there so I hardly call it a failed experiment. I want to live in a first world country while I build my savings. Maybe Thailand is ok to retire but I don't want to gamble with my career or health living there full time. Like I said I don't dislike Thailand and will be visiting every year for the forseeable future. Any way up to you handsome man.

No its till charming, was in a back soi the other day during daylight thankfully and saw a sight that would make your sphincter go into spasms. A hole in the ground that would swallow up a toddler at night or at least a compound fracture for drunk farang . Thats why I get cabs when drunk :D

The bad outwiegh the good :)

That comment is not politically correct. The fact it is absolutely true of course is besides the point.

Sounds like the OP is living in a dump like Pattaya, try somewhere else like Chiang Mai, where people are nice and it isn't sleazy.

Well sorry you are unhappy in Thailand. Sometimes it takes some time away to remember what it was you liked about it in the first place. And sometimes thaat time away just reinforces your original decision. Good luck to you.

But, I have to take umbrage with this particular comment.

5. Rude Thai males, if they got a little money, they think there crap don't stink.

You do realize it smacks more than just a little of the typical "uppity little brown men" attitude and that perhaps they think they are something because its their community and their culture? Perhaps if you didn't have what seems to be a pretty poor attitude towards Thai men that you might actually find most of them are quite decent and nice? They can tell when someone treats them in a patronizing and superior way and I can imagine that if someone came to your country and treated you that way you probably wouldnt' be the friendliest of souls either. A little empathy goes a really long way.

Agree with you there. All the Thai men I've met have been unfailingly polite and friendly. They've tried to 'rip' me off sometimes, but they've never been rude.

Skip,

Good luck to you old mate, I hope you find somewhere nice to settle.

I understand where you are coming from. I'm not too worried about having a base camp, which makes things easy for me, so I'm going to travel afterall Thailand is only one little tiny country in a massive world. I ditched most of my assets, the kind that clog up your life and arnt necessary, however I will admit to have a few motorcycles and a couple of other items scattered between 3 different parts of the globe.

If you can afford to, do what the song says & 'Hit the road Jack', don't look back, just keep moving, its all good :D .

I wish you the best & don't worry about the old gripes people here that are bound to whinge at what you have said, afterall you pointed out just a few of the flaws in this place and many of them have sunk everything they have into properties and investements in other peoples names :D:) , looks like your the one laughing now.

Unfortunately you can only 'hit the road, jack' until you reach a certain age or point. Once there you're stuffed - which is why so many men come to Thailand knowing they will find a woman here easily, whereas they won't back home. It seems so easy until you live here for a while - hence the original post!!

Big thumbs up! did the same myself, its amazing how much it costs to sustain a western lifestyle and I'm just talking basics

1.mortgage...everybody upside down on this in the west

2. car............ just add the payments to the list

3. mobile phone :D I do remember $700 phone bills but to be fair half business

4. shopping at coles. What you think is a few meals home made cost $70 (no booze in that)

5. Dating well we all know don't we :)

Dont forget that outside of Thailand, you'll be subjected to a lot of advertising pressure,

spams, direct calls, mailers, billboards, everywhere you turn every minute of the day,

everyday of the year. Buy, buy buy ...

and middle-aged men being the endangered species?

yes, its a difficult question whether to be the little fish in a big pond

or a bigger fish in a little pond ...
