The SPONSOR of course. there would always be a sponsor in the wings somewhere, after all, they could have the naming rights for the canoes.

and of course we would be drinking their beer,using their mobile phone provider, wearing a polo shirt, some of us would be smoking their brand of cigarettes.

When I was living in Darwin in Australia, some clever bunnies set up a ice hockey team and they would send out challenges to international clubs, of course they would not fly from Calgary to Darwin, no Ice at 40''c, therefore Darwin would claim victory by default, and they would spend the rest of the month celebrating on the sponsor's product. Cheeky and very social.
