Windows Task Manager Says High Cpu Usage

Featured Replies

My PC is again as slow as h*ll.

When I check task manager sometimes it tells me the CPU usage is a high as 96% and 1.05 GB PF usage. This is just when I'm on the inernet whilst using i-tunes and doing an AVG and Super-Antispyware scan.

This can't be right can it? When I look at Processes I see one that says 'NMIndecStoreSvr.exe' that is around 50% and 'System Idle Process' is at about 30%. Is this right?

That is Nero Media Index Store Server. Background task installed by Nero and which is part of the Nero Scout utility which comes bundled with Nero. I personally would disable Nero Scout as I find it not that useful and eats CPU cycles. You can disable Nero Scout by simply right-clicking the icon in the System Tray, choosing OPTIONS and unchecking "Enable Nero Scout".

//edit - also, to be sure it is disabled, uncheck the service in "services" tab of MSCONFIG (Start > run > msconfig)

When I ran that command I was shown a list of a lot of things running, most of which I did not recognise. I didn't actually see the one mentioned previously. Checking the task manager again it seems to be gone.

I did however run an anti-spyware tool which found and removed 5 items. The machine is now back to running much better. This is not the first time I have had to do this. I don't know where this stuff comes from.

Download and use Process Explorer.

In addition to telling you exactly what the process is, it gives the option to right-click on a process and send it directly to a web search to help you investigate what might be using your CPU / memory, etc..
