churchill
A number of junior police officers on Tuesday lodged a complaint with a House subcommittee, saying a number of non-commissioned police officers, including a daughter of police chief Patcharawat Wongsuwan, had been promoted to be commissioned officers without taking a promotion exam. The complainants, led by Senior Sgt-Maj Rathphum Phosrita of Muang Ratchaburi police station, filed the complaint with Vachara Phetthong, a Democrat Party MP and spokesman of the House subcommittee on public participation and monitoring of use of state power. The police said they were among some 423 non-commissioned officers who had been put on a waiting list for promotion. However, the promotion had been slow because many outsiders and those who never took the exam had been made commissioned officers ahead of them. They included Pol Lance Corporal Navaporn, Pol Gen Patcharawat's daughter, and Pol Lance Corporal Songphan, a son of Pol Gen Chat Kuldilok, a retired officer continued http://www.bangkokpost.com/breakingnews/15...ion-for-justice -- Bangkok Post 18/08/
dale8
Hello, I am shocked to hear any allegations of corruption inside the police organization. Do they know it is who you know that will get them a promotion, or should they try to work hard and do it the more difficult way? We will not know as this will be swept under the rug with most of the other objections.
TAWP
Police are unable to follow rules and laws. Anyone surprised?
micksterbs
Police are unable to follow rules and laws.Anyone surprised? Nope. Also the situation in Thai schools and colleges, I'm afraid. I can think of a couple of examples in my own place and several more in my wife's college. Certain spectacularly untalented individuals pass their government teaching exams with flying colours. One discovers later that they just happen to have an uncle, say, who works at the ministry. Thailand; the country behind that old truism of "It's not what you know, it's who you know". Makes the heart glad, doesn't it?
chickenslegs
I fear that "Senior Sgt-Maj Rathphum Phosrita of Muang Ratchaburi police station" may find his career on hold for some time.
peecee
My bro'n law is a S/sgt with a degree & highly recommended but can't get on the list, his dad was just a teacher with no connection's to the elite; so no commision.
alstaxi
Is anyone really surprised at any of this ? I am a litle surprised that S/Sgt Rat had the balls to do such a possible carreer/life ending act.
mca
It's nice to see junior cops sticking up for themselves rather than kowtowing to the "Puu Yai" To me the arse licking deference shown to people who have done nothing to deserve that respect is the bane of Thailand. Plus
Not to start wars, but during Thaksin years standing up to police pooyais was simply impossible.
onnut
they might be standing up to them, but pretty soon they will be standing down again. I cannot imagine promotions will be given to these "nobodies" just because they complained.
Plus
Well, they are standing up to Patcharawat, and he is retiring next month. I also don't think they are relying on the petition only - I bet they have their own backup, perhaps some honest (gasp) officers who recommened them to go public. The enemies of Patcharawat Wongsuwan have sent their foot soldiers forward to embarrass him in the political powerplay for influence in the police. No way Senior Sgt-Maj Rathphum acted alone here. nisakiman
Nepotism? In the Thai Police Force? No, I can't believe that those pillars of law and order could even contemplate bending the rules... There must be some misunderstanding...

henryalleman
This is just the top of the Iceberg, Insiders could tell you, that for working in some locations you have to pay upto 5 million baht. Depending on the rank, sometimes even higher. This was so already 30 years ago, I don't know the current rates. Do you realy think that the chocolate they receive is only for himself? Don't be naive. The evidence would be existence of police officers protesting against their pooyais' decisions. I don't remember any. Thaksin cronies made it all the way to the top without any visible hindrance, and I suppose not all juniors were excited about it, including those whose promotions have been put on hold to accomodate the rise to Thaksin's horde. If they dared to protest - I'd like to see some evidence. I don't remember any such cases, as I said.

I cannot imagine promotions will be given to these "nobodies" just because they complained. Research the history of the HK Police department a bit. If Abhist can survive and be effective, these 'nobodies' will soon be running the police department.
