What gives with Emirates: Bangkok <> Birmingham?

Out Nov. '09 - In Feb. '10

rtn BHX > BKK = £464

rtn BKK > BHX = £787

Same date flights.

That's almost 70% more if the rtn flight is booked from Thailand compared to being booked from The UK!

Are they having a laugh?

Emirates prices are pretty high at the moment. I was quoted last week BKK-LGW 41K baht (incl taxes). So I bought Qatar for 29K

Just to add to the above posting, I believe that Emirates only sells 12 month returns from BKK. The Qatar ticket is a 1 month return. I suppose that your cheap UK-BKK ticket is only 3 months??

seems to me that locally in BHX they are discounting the fare because of low demand or some other competitive reason whereas the BKK - Dubai route in particular is very full most of the time. Each office sets their own fares. For example, flights originating from Thailand, the bkk office gets the revenue / credit and set their fares according to demand I guess.

but if you really want to know call up their office and ask?

prices have ALWAYS been different, depending from where u depart. it's all about markets, demand and supply....

best example is based here in Thailand:

since ages, THAI AIR often has VERY cheap discounted 30-day-tickets when starting your journey in Europe (had one at 379 € incl. tax a few years ago), but never in my life I have seen prices as low as 400 Euro for THAI AIR flights going to Europe, departing Thailand.

the next thing is that the prices on airline websites are in many cases more expensive than what u could get from an agent.

it's a misbelief to think that the prices on airline-websites are always the cheapest. that might be the case for budget carriers who generally don't work with agents, but certainly not when it comes to legacy-/full-service-carriers

I understand what you're trying to say, but these are return fares and if paid for from the UK, you still occupy that premium BBK - Dubai seat on some part of the journey - for a fraction of the price.

I recall up until a couple of years ago, it used to be the opposite way round, being cheaper to buy your ticket in Thailand. That's why I came here on a single 3 years ago, so that I could buy the cheaper return ticket in Thailand :) .

Etihad just had a recent sale, 16,500 baht from Bkk-Europe including London and 360 quid from Uk - Bkk, both return and INC taxes. Finished on Aug 15th though so now back to mid 20k I think.

Hi there, I flew out from Manchester in march 2009 and my booking was a return there was some sort of reason that I could only book the return up to a maximun of 341 days , however, when I booked this trip I was assured that I could have one free date change on the return journey , as it stands at the moment I am booked to fly back to Manchester on 29th Jan 2010, but before that date I will change to a date in March Hope this helps

Actually, last year when I wanted to fly back to the UK, I took up the price difference issue with Emirates on the telephone.

I suggested that I bought a ticket UK > BKK > UK and changed the dates around. They said I could change dates around no problem, no charge, but I could not change dates which had the effect of altering the "originating airport". I.e. I couldn't buy a UK>BKK return and START my journey in BKK. Worth a try calling though, I thought :) .

During the call they fed me a load of <deleted> about high and low seasons being the reason for ticket price differences BTW.

No airline will allow this.

Dubai > BKK (return) - £523

competition on the route between the uk and dubai. if you notice, only TG and EK fly to Dubai from BKK. How many airlines from the UK fly to Dubai?

anyways mate, all airlines do this kind of thing. pricing is very complicated and changes litterally by the hour.

Indeed same for me.

Now there are people who think to defend this by telling that this is the normal law of supply and demand.

Which of course is <deleted>.

It is all about how much they can rip you off.

So, I'm not alone with my way of thinking hans :D

I'm now starting to think about heading back to the UK next time on Air Asia with a "single", then buy an emirates "return" ticket in the UK at the hugely cheaper UK prices. That's a sure way to make sure the price differential between buying in Thailand and the UK flips back the other way again!!! :)

I have answered this question before and will answer it again.

The airlines prefer to have European rather than Thai customers as they are more profitable. It's to do with litter, taking every 'free' item, luggage weight, purchase of on-board duty free items and other issues.

(my highlight above)

Otherwise known as the law of supply and demand. How much can they demand, before you look for an alternative source of supply, for your transportation. :)

I have changed my flights plenty of times with no charges applied. Only when I did this with Gulf Air the other day I was charged £100 for the priviledge.

Maybe worth checking this with their bangkok office.

ive seen almost £200 difference flying from newcastle uk to bangkok via dubai depending on the time of year and how long your staying,

at the moment its £492.54 to £621.54 Economy last year it cost me almost £700 but this year its been as low as £420, maybe it has a lot to do with the fuel prices? who nos.

Mention in this thread that Emirates fly from places like Birmingham & Newcastle, reminds me that they actually fly via Dubai from several UK-airports, but only to one place in Thailand. How much longer must we wait, before Emirates (or indeed some other Gulf-based operator) offer Phuket and/or Chiang-Mai, as well as Bangkok ?

This would shave 3-4 hours journey-time, and a few thousand Baht, off the cost for those of us tourists or expats who don't want to go to the capital or Pattaya ! :D

And am I the only one who finds it odd that Thai Airways only go to one place in the UK ? Did they never analyse this market, and see how many potential-customers are lost to them, because they don't want the long/expensive trek down to LHR ? :)
