BANGKOK: -- Thailand’s deputy Prime Minister and veteran politician Gen. Chavalit Yongchaiyudh has announced his retirement from the local politics. But he vowed to continue to work with the government on national security issues.

Gen. Chavalit told local reporters after Tuesday’s cabinet meeting here that he would not take any position in the next government.

In the next two weeks, Gen. Chavalit will submit a report on Thailand’s overall national security situation to Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Gen. Chavalit was Thailand’s prime minister during the economic crash eight years ago and was forced to resign because the middle class was dissatisfied with his government's handling of the situation.

The former prime minister’s expertise in national security and military strategic planning has been highly respected by the current premier.

Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister Purachai Piumsombun also announced his retirement from the Thai politics, saying that he would like to live with his family in New Zealand and become a lecturer there.

I hope the NZ government will let him make a visa run every 3 months.

Chavalit's not going anywhere. He still is an 'influential person' on a number of fronts, legit and otherwise...

Now he's talking about a run for the Senate, where many of his kindred godfathers are currently hanging their hats
