Bangkok is a Thailand city, so it's part of the real Thailand. The issue is not real Thailand vs "fake" Thailand, or whatever you want to call it, but city vs region. It's the same thing in every country in the world.

My experience is that once Thais discover someone holds Lao, Burmese or Cambodian nationality (not always apparent as their Thai may be word perfect), they do one or all of the following:-

1) treat the person as a 7-year-old child

2) treat the person as if they had an IQ of 75

3) condescend

4) treat the person as a slave/servant

5) treat the person as a member of a different species

6) have them arrested the day before pay day

Worst offenders seem to be low-class, ill-mannered, provincial Thais. There is an analogy to WWII Korean prison guards here.

If anyone is deserving of NGO assistance, it is this disenfranchised, powerless group of migrant workers.
