I have been diagnosed with an eye condition called posterior vitreous detachment that might require a kind of surgery called vitrectomy ...

The doctor I visited (Dr Suthep, near the Muang District Office), said I have retinal damage and am at high risk of retinal detachment.

A quick look on the Internet list Bangkok Phuket Hospital as the the only medical facility offering it in Phuket.

I would deeply appreciate advice from anyone who has undergone this procedure in Phuket: where you got it done, cost, outcome, professionalism of the surgeon, eye surgeons on the island in general, etc.

Thanks to anyone who can provide useful info.

I've had no experience of eye surgery in Phuket but would recommend the following link in Bangkok:

Thanks for you advice - especially as you are the only one who replied - but I needed retinal surgery for a tear in left retina, not Lasik to improve my visual acuity.

I went to the Phuket International Hospital, where General Opthamologist Dr Sasivimol referred me to Dr Captain at Bangkok Phuket Hospital, who did the surgery on both eyes the following day. Both doctors were very professional. Cost: about 8,000 baht per eye.

However, tt's an extremely uncomfortable procedure and sometimes painful too.

What I have learned from all this is that the vision problems I am now experiencing (extreme 'floaters' in my left eye from blood entering the vitreous humor) could have been avoided with preventative surgery (which is why I had my left eye done too).

People like myself with high nearsightedness (-7.0) with thin retinas and diabetics are at risk.

I would recommend anyone getting on in years who falls into these risk groups consider getting it done, as the possible alternatives could be a torn retina like I have experienced or even retinal detachment and complete blindness in the affected eye.

As for these 'floaters', Dr Captain said these floaters should go away on their own over 3-4 months -- and I hope he's right because they are very annoying/disorienting.

Anyway, this is my attempt at using a computer and I don't want to prolong it as I am not supposed to strain my eyes for a week. I just wanted to post this for the record in case they might help someone else.

My apologies, I thought that the Rutin Hospital offered a greater range of procedures apart from just Lasik. That being the case, if I were in your situation, I would be inclined to visit Bumrungrad in Bangkok and see what they had to see - I prefer to use Bumrungrad for all important health related issues since they have a high standard of care and am extensive range of specialists.

I just wanted to add that both my wife and I go to Dr. Captain and are very satisfied. I believe he is one of the few Retinologists in Thailand. He just did cataract surgery on both my wife's eyes and the results were excellent. Dr. Captain just gave me a laser treatment for the left eye to address an area of retinal weakness. (I have had retinal surgery in year's past in the US) Dr. Captain's English is excellent and he is thorough in explaining his diagnosis and recommendations. Good luck! These eye issues aren't fun but we're lucky to live in a period where the technology exists to actually preserve our eyesight!

Thanks for the good wishes and I am in 100% agreement that these preventative treatments are a godsend of modern technology. Even if the procedures are very uncomfortable (or, as in my case, painful), it's nothing compared to possible alternatives.

I also hold Dr Sasivimol at Bangkok International in very high regard as a general opthamologist as well.

She could have done the operation herself, but instead referred me to Dr Captain at a competing private hospital as the island's top retinal specialist and urged me to get both eyes done right away. Very professional, perfect English and a very impressive clinic here at PIH -- reasonably priced too.

For Cataract kind of eye surgery, including cataract surgery and replacement lenses, retinal problems, the best eye doctor in my view in Phuket is Dr. Captain Wirilayuppa at Bangkok Phuket Hospital in north Phuket town past Wachira Government Hospital. I had my cataract surgery their, and had a beyond excellent result. The nurses washed their hands with disinfectant each time they applied eye drops to me. The Hospital is approved by the Joint Commission for Accreditation of Hospitals, a USA monitoring body, only a couple of Thai hospitals are so approved.
