I finally bought a DVD drive and am using Nero 8 to burn music audio files. I am using the startsmart data burning option, but have discovered after the burn is completed, some of the folder and file names were truncated. Apparently, they were longer than 60 or 65 chars. Some musical folder and track names can be somewhat longer. I don't see an option where I can increase or override this. Is there another module within Nero8 that I can use that will accept longer names.

I am just trying to make a dup backup of my audio files whether they are mp3, flac, ogg, wav etc.

Thanks

That limitation is not Nero but is a limit from the international standard Joliet which allows up to 64 characters. Joliet also allows Unicode where as ISO9660 had shorter names and extensions.

Here are the limits for Joliet (Level 2):

Filename – 64 characters max

Pathname – 128 characters (full path + filename)

8 subdirectories max

4gb file length limit

So, if the actual filename does not exceed 64, check your full path name length and shorten it if necessary. Also, check and see if you have an ISO tab option and select ISO9660:1999 which allows 207 characters (Level III). The other option is setting ISO option to UDF.

I am a novice when it comes to backing up to DVD.

I originally loaded the Cyberlink software which came with the DVD drive but it corrupted the sound of my audio files but the problem went away when I uninstalled it.

I used it twice before discovering the problem and it DID NOT truncate the names. One file name was 69 chars long plus ".mp3" and a folder name was 73 chars long. Both remained unchanged on the DVD CD.

Using the Nero 8 software, I made a second set of backups, the same file name was reduced to 60 chars plus ".mp3" and folder name was reduced to 64 chars.

Unless Cyberlink is following a different standard, I am confused by your answer?

Please remember I know nothing about the standards. I even thought I could safely backup up to 4.6G but both Cyberlink and Nero didn't like that.

Edit: Hope I can get this resolved cause many of my Classical music name's can be rather long. For example, "Bartok - Concerto for Orchestra, Music for Strings, Percussion & Celesta - Bernstein - NYPO" Note that I have already abbreviated the orchestra name "New York Philharmonic Orchestra".

I have not used Nero for the same reasons for +5 years now - it always adds another bit or two to complicate issues

It basically is trying to maintain a handle on that market.

I use a small Linux program - KB3 - that will do anything you tell it to.

Otherwise hunt around the Net - there are plenty freebies out there - try Sunburner - it just crossed my mind - free and about <1.2M - M$

I keep all my really good music on portable HDD - dont trust CD/DVD - never did.

I currently have my music on portable hard drives too but want to have backups just in case.

Why don't you trust CD/DVD?

Sorry, but I guess I overlooked the above. Where would I find these settings?

One would think that a single, bad experience with a Nero-encrypted audio playback file would be sufficient?! Folks often overthink the problem. KISS

CD/DVD formats go away - I have +300 boot disks that dont work anymore - I have Nero data backups - ditto!!

Most HDD are running >1m hrs MTBF - they will outlive us. The same cannot be said of CD/DVD or SSD

When it comes to failed data backups, I dont have the time or inclination to deliberate - avoidance is smarter.

In the HDD the platters are internal - not external.
