Phone Extension - 100 Meters

Featured Replies

A neighbor has a land-line they don't use anymore so offered it to us. It would be convenient to have the extra line just for the Internet.

To save hassle and expense of having the line moved thought it would be easiest to just run an extension from their house to ours. I was thinking of connecting to the two wires that are in the little grey box on his wall and getting a similar box to put on my wall, that way I could connect an earth as he has. Are those little grey phone connection boxes available to purchase?

The main thought is the type of wire from their house to ours. I know TOT uses twin single strand so presumably the flat twin .5 electrical wire would do. What about twin multi-strand flex? That would presumably cope better with flapping about in the wind.

Does it matter whether its twin single stranded or multi strand wire? Any problem with signal loss on ADSL?

Just had a thought, is regular TOT wire available to the general public? :)

Cheers

Get the thick black phone cable used outside everywhere. It has a third strand that is basically a steel wire to help holding things together. Although I've had my phone line extended several times I always paid some Thai guy to do the actual work and I don't know where they buy the cable, nor how much it cost, but it's not expensive. I'm sure you can find it easily. I would try asking in hardware shops or Home Pro or Amorn shop for starters. Same place would most likely have the gray grounding box too.

Have you actually gone in person to see about a legal land line installed in your home? Up Country the installation cost was nil, service great, and monthly base fee is 100 baht. We have a land line so that we can then have a proper Maxnet Internet Connection. It is NOT a SBC/ATT connection fee as in the USA in Thailand. If you "Jerry rig" it then good luck with service.

The thick black phone cable as used by TOT would be the way to go if available to general public - will look into that.

We already have a land line this would be an extra one just for the Internet. I would not bother actually buying an extra line but if I can get one by just running a cable and paying the 100bt month might go for it.

The black cable is freely available at construction/hardware shops. As are the line termination boxes you want (the one with the earth connector, they supposedly divert lightning strikes to the earth).

The cable comes on 200 meter rolls though...
