Hi - I'll be moving to Chiang Mai in late December 2009 with my dog from Chicago, and naturally, I'm very nervous about the LONG flight for my doggy! Its a 16 hour flight to Seoul, a 4 hour layover there, then another 5 hours to Chiang Mai. I was wondering if anyone else has done this trip with their dog, and how they handled it. She's my baby and I'm overly paranoid about her safety. If anyone can offer any peace of mind or share their experiences, I would really appreciate it! Thanks!

<Also, this is my first post, so if I did this wrong or posted in the wrong place, let me know!>

Hello.

i didnt bring my dog from us but from germany and i can understand your concerns!it was no fun for the dog but he recovered very quickly!

BUT what you should have done and should do if there is any possibility, change your flight to a direct flight to bangkok and then take a rental car up to chiang mai.because this will be very hard for the dog and changing flights is a absolutly no go with a dog!

regards

We brought our two dogs to CM 3 years ago. They were small and fit under the seat,Thai Airlines. It was a direct flight JFL- BKK (16 hours), 1 hour layover and 1 hour to CM. So, for us very easy.

I am sure you know that the dog will need all the regular shots, is well and you will get a US Dept Of AG. form from you vet saying so. It may have to be very recent(the form), I do not remember how long, but 3 days would be good.

We gave ours a mild seditive and they did very well. The concern is hydration as the humidity is only 15%. We were able to give ours water. Talk to your vet. The FAA keeps a public record of animal problems by airline ,I think.

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE VERY SOLID PAPERWORK FROM THE AIRLINE. You do not want to show up an get dumb looks. Also they must notify CM Dept. of AG that you are coming.

There is a 30% duty on dogs moving here for good so yours is only staying whatever, 6 months. You will enter the dog in Chiang Mai there should be no problem with that at all.

For a Vet we use Ban Mha Ka Meaw, 053 204215, corner of Chiang Mai Land St and the Super HWY. Dr.Chakrit (owner) is the one to ask for. Educated in USA , a full lab on site and very cheap compared to USA. Best vet I have ever used. Worth the trip.

Good Luck.

Make it easy on yourself and give your dog away to a pet loving relative or friend.

Taking them through the gauntlet through Korea lol where they're possibly on the menu and to here where they will be mixed w/ strays is not worth it to stress an animal that is used to a non- 3rd world country.

Yep, it might have been better to post this in the "Plans, Pets & Vets" Forum where you will find a lot of useful and interesting tales about folks bring their pets to Thailand. Anyway check it out now and I am sure you will find re-assurance and answers to many of your questions.

Our 2 dogs are 15 years they came 4 years ago. They do very well thank you. They speak more Thai than I do.You might consider overnight to LA where you can stay in Holiday Inn for a night to give you and the Dog a rest.

Take the LAX-BKK flight. One hour wait and then 50 min on to CM. The WX in both LA and BKK should be cool enough not to be a danger. It is the only way I can stand my yearly trip to see the kids. It is more $ but lots more leg room and back of the seat movies, also cuts a lot of hours off US to LOS trip.
