พจนานุกรมไทย-อังกฤษ พร้อมซีดี

Featured Replies

I just saw in B2S today that the fourth edition of "พจนานุกรมไทย-อังกฤษ พร้อมซีดี", Domnern-Sathienpong, Thai-English dictionary is now being sold. See http://www.se-ed.com/eShop/Products/Detail...o=9789742129200 . Note that this dictionary comes with a CD version as well which can be loaded onto your computer. The third edition was published by Matichon Books; the latest edition is now being published by Se-ed.

The price of the hard-cover third edition was 570 baht; the new edition is being sold for 355 baht. The website notes that the book is hard-cover; the one I saw in B2S was a paperback.

Does anyone know if the material has been revised with the change in publisher?

An excellent question, though it's just as likely that "4th edition" is just a way of tricking people into buying the new publisher's version.

If anyone (who does not already own the 3rd edition) buys it -- and I highly recommend doing so -- please post a sample page or two if you can, or perhaps type out a few entries, so we can make a proper comparison.

I'll only buy it if it's been revised, or if there's some other improvement.

I have the 2nd Edition (1999) published by Amarin (3rd Ed by Matichon, 4th Ed by Se-ed, whose in line for the 5th I wonder???!)

I bet that CD-Rom only works on a PC too (not a Mac)...would love to hear otherwise if anyone gets the chance to check it out before I do.

As luck would have it, the B2S shop is next to the nappy-selling department in Central, so I sneaked off from shopping duty to go have a peek at the dictionary.

Yep, it does look like a proper revised edition. I can't talk about the entries because I didn't have the 3rd ed, but it's certainly different from my 2nd edition. They mention in the foreword that concordance has been checked through google and not just via RID. They mention additional collocations and example in use (verify the last claim, though, I'm going by memroy but it was about here my wife started calling me back to task...)

Anyway for 395baht you get a 800pp hardback with a searchable CD-Rom. This is great value for money because they claim that the CD has both English and Thai audio for all entries. That's a stunningly good piece of kit if it works like they imply. The CD-Rom is compatible with Windows 2000, ME, and Vista. It's best used as a light-reflector on the back of your motorbike if you happen to be a Mac owner, unfortunately :)

There is one downside to this edition - the print is much smaller and harder to read than my 2nd edition. Since my 2nd ed is 778pp and larger print, one can only be positive and assume the reduction in size is due to an increase in entries, collocation and examples.

At this price and with the CD-Rom I can't see any reason for not buying it.

I wonder how Thai2English.com are coming along with their plan to sell a Mac-compatible CD-Rom dictionary? Does anyone know if there is a Thai-English dic for Mac in existence anywhere at all??

Thank you, คุณน้ำนิ่ม, for that information. Version 3 also comes with a CD which is downloadable to one's computer. And, the audio does work great. I appreciate the effort. Question: did you have to tear off the plastic straight-jacket at B2S?

I was lucky - there was a liberated copy at the back of the pile of wrapped ones!
