Can anyone recommend a western trained massage therapist who can give a quality deep tissue massage?

Yes, there are many Thai massage places here in town but we've yet to find one very well trained in deep tissue. Spa facility is not important - but the therapist is.

any help appreciated!

Named 'Loi Kroh Massage' in Soi 3 Loi Kroh Rd..about 30 metres in on the left side. Run by Rutger and his wife who also runs a massage school..also specialise in hot stone massage as well as deep tissue. Tell him I sent you and he will take good care of you..he will anyway.

More commonly known as 'Hot Stone Massage'?

If you go there, make sure you book either Su or Mai for oil massage. I'm a professional masseur myself, and I've had a devil of a job finding a decent oil masseuse in Chiang Mai. Very good Thai masseuses are easily found, but few have had decent training in deep tissue oil massage. Hot Stone Massage Loi Kroh Soi 3 is excellent. Mai is petite but the stronger of the two masseuses, so for anyone on the large size Mai is better than Su. For a medium strength massage (ectomorphs rather than endomorphs/mesomorphs) Su is superb. Other masseuses there are excellent at Thai massage but don't seem to have much of an idea about oil massage.

superpiccirillo,

I am visiting Chiang Mai for a week in October. I'm trained and nationally certified in the States as a massage therapist and specialize in deep tissue massage and ortho-massage based on anatomy (versus sen, energy, lines). Send me a private message you're interested in a deep tissue, therapeutic, professional massage. I know how to use hot stones. But, I don't prefer to use them for relaxation massages. I only use them if I need to quickly heat up a particular muscle for deeper work or as an aide to break down an adhesion. You would need to find a massage table or a place with a massage table for me to use. I can massage side-lying without a massage table too. Clients are draped throughout the entire massage just like in the States. I have dual nationality, so I don't think there would be a problem with me giving a massage.
