Falafel Shop In Chiang Mai -cheap Too!

I heard about a little falafel stand set up on Rachaprakhini in front of the Julie Guesthouse Soi. Last night I checked it out. I got there kind of late, near 9pm I think and they were already well packed up. I asked if I was too late but the guy said that it depends what I want. He made my falafel and fries and was a really friendly guy from Florida. The falafel was good and only 45b and the fries 25b. Pretty good meal for 70b! I also saw that they have hamburgers for 30b. I will be back soon to try them out. The fries are the skinny shoestring ones but were ok. They have a surprisingly large menu for the size of the little shop. Apparently the guy feels that western food doesn't need to be as expensive as it is compared to Thai food. Oh ya, its called Cafe Tropico and its South of Same Same Guesthouse and across the road.

> I dont mean to be pedantic, but

It's a natural talent!!! :D

Anyway, the Middle East is to the West of us, so I think it qualifies as Western. Those Westies tend to call the whole wide world East of Istanbul 'East' as well, and everyone from Georgia to Papua New Guinea 'Asian' , so... so... [ err, no particular point ] :)

Thanks for all the tips! I can't stand that one on Moonmuang with those infriendly people that run it.

I don't know Julie's Guesthouse. Where is it in relation to Tha Pae gate. I googled Julie's Guesthouse for directions but their website has a map so small I couldn't read.

I second that -there are so many guesthouses in Chiangmai, it's impossible to know them all. :)

I dont mean to be pedantic, but is the Falafel not Middle Eastern?

Iain

My thoughts exactly and I wouldn`t classify falafel as Western food.

By the way, what is falafel? sounds like it means camel dung in arabic.

I believe it is made from a vegetable called chick peas. I think it is the same vegetable that Italians call garbanzo beans. They mash them, add some spices and things, form them into balls and deed fry them. A real middle eastern falafel is a pretty good snack food.

By the way, is the seller a Middle Eastern guy who comes from Florida?

Thanks for the info, I love Falafel, but never had a good one in Thailand.

From Thapae Gate, you would go down Ratchadamnoen (west) and turn left and Ratchaprakhini (south). You will cross Ratchamanka then the shop will be ahead (150m) on your right.

Yes, extremely rude as well as unfriendly. Rudeness doesn't come naturally to Thais, so the husband must have learned it from the wife.

One of their suppliers had her copy his main product, another told me that if I ever saw the state of their kitchen I'd never eat there again. So I didn't.

Good luck to the new man, and if he's cooking and serving food for all to see, I hope for his sake that he has a work permit.

They have falafels, hamburgers, french fries, fruit shakes, and quite a few other things that I can't remember now. What word would you like to use to some up this menu? I am so sorry for the great confusion with such a misleading adjective.

BTW; has anybody tried a 30b hamburger there yet? I keep meaning to but never get around to it.

Burger and fries 50 Baht. Burgers are Pork Chicken or Shrimp. Smallish but tasty. If you're famished buy two.

Blake, I'd like to second that. I jumped on the old bicycle and wandered in from Hang Dong. Motorcyclists use petrol but I use falafels. Tasty fuel. A few hours later, after some unproductive errrands, I returned for some tabbouleh salad. I've got a real weak spot for that, and it was excellent. I met the owner that time too. Nice guy. I'm a happy boy.

Would Jesus really wear purple sandals? Never mind.

(That's a reference to my avatar. Not sure if you can see the sandals when it's shrunk.)

If you want to zoom a webpage on-the-fly, hit control (command Mac) and scroll the mouse wheel up simultaneously to zoom in/down to zoom out. Should work on all browsers as well as programmes like Word, Adobe etc. :)

The grub sounds like a good deal, will check it out, cheers.

The Lahu wife says that its pretty early morning, and to the East of the Night Bazaar, on a soi just North of Hotshot/Pornping Tower. Never been myself, but I'm not too well known for early mornings either.

How early? If it's early enough, maybe I can look in on the way home. :)

By the way, what does 'The Lahu wife' mean? Do you have a selection of wives?

The Lahu wife said this, the Akha wife said that, the Thai wife said.....?

Jimmy Tarbuck used to refer to his wife as 'my current wife'. He said it kept her on her toes. :D

  • 1 month later...

Stopped by the Cafe Tropico the other day and had the chicken burger and fries. Delicious. Really hit the spot.

The coffee...apparently I use the same beans they buy (the good ones) but the cup the gal (Jay) made was better than mine : (

I took a snap of the burger and fries www.everythingcraig.com and then before I left the husband John drove up and I got a picture of them in the shop.

Good food, cheap prices, friendly people.

I'll be back.

Just an update to the falafel shop in Chiang Mai mentioned above (Cafe Tropico). A few changes to note. Was surfing and on a site mapsnmore.com I came accross the same restaurant but the name has benn changed to The Funky Monkey Cafe. And now there is another branch at the corner of Moon Muang and soi 9. The same soi that heads off to the Blue Diamond restaurant. I saw they now have veggie burgers and fried fillet of fish sandwiches as well so I tried out the new one a couple of times and the food is still good and the same low prices.

Mmm...frown... don't blame the wife, we are all responsible for own actions. She is actually very nice... it is him who is grumpy...

Update: Funky Monkey is closed. But the one near Julie's Guesthouse seems to be still open (I was told at Moonmuang- Soi9)
