Recommendations For Builder Of Kitchens And Built-ins

I am looking for some recommendations of people that can do my kitchen and built-ins in the other various rooms. The house is completed, but just bare walls on the inside (bathrooms are mostly complete). I am leaning towards custom builds, but have also looked at what is available at Home Pro as well as a few other places.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

Craig,

All up and down Thepprasit road (thats the big road from Sukhumvit down to Jomtien, turn at Tesco Lotus/Outlet Mall) there are many many shops specialising in Kitchens and built in furniture, Both sides of the entire length of Thepprasit Road - lots of choice, good luck. :)

Lenny: Great info...again! I spent all day on Thepprasit Road. Just too many choices!!!!

John: Euro Design is interesting. Modern for sure. We are not sure if we want that modern look or go with custom wood cabinets for a more traditional look. Still debating that one.

Prices were all over the place. Sure pays to shop around. I was quoted 43,000 baht/sq meter down to 27,000 baht/sm for custom teak cabinets. Not sure what the difference would be, but I will research that for sure.

I did not stop into the shops, but there are a bunch of curtain places on that road also. We will deal with later for sure.

Thanks so much!!!!!

Let's know the results of your research.

I found when I was looking for a new kitchen that they were only interested in doing the standard modular cabinetry and not proper built in units.

Hi; I live just off Soi European Villa and I haeactly the same requirements that you described. Found my litle joinery-workshop just around the corner here. They did our kitchen, island plus quiet a it of built-in Book-shelves and cabinets. Very reasonably priced and very nice work too.

if you're interested, just PM me and I'll point you in the right direction.

John,

I did meet with Oui yesterday. She was the one that had lower prices, but also really good designs. I liked her work. I meet with her again Monday with my wife, and then we meet up with her Tuesday at the house so she can measure and work up a price.

I also liked Surat at Kitchen Corner, across the street. Don't have any prices from her yet...we meet Tuesday also.

Thanks!!!

Craig

If you'd like to see a few kitchens and robes her husband did for me, let me know, i'll mail you pic's.

good luck. Oh! an important point about Khun Leaf and Ou's work, they guarantee everything and never hesitate to return for free service if you're not happy. bye

You buy kitchen cabinets by the linear meter; you buy tiles, marble and granite by the square meter. That being said, I don't like the custom cabinets because if you look at them after they are installed or while they are being installed, you will see quite a bit of flaws in them.

Pattaya has very poor carpenters, and that’s an understatement. The finishing and repair of your cabinets will be left up to the painters who attempt to fill the hole and flaws with wood putty and then match up the stain. It never works if you're staining or using the natural color of the wood. However, if they paint them it comes out to an acceptable level, but far from perfect.

You should be able to get your teak cabinets in the 20 to 22K range if you have your heart set on them. You can try Tawee, who has a big shop on Thepprasit and runs one of the biggest carpenter and painter crews in the city. He speaks excellent English and his number is 0861-942-277.

For the 25 condos I have renovated I have always used PK kitchen, who also has a shop on Thepprasit. His cabinets are made in a factory in Bangkok and come out as close to perfect as you are going to get in Pattaya. His name is Yoltin and speaks pretty good English; his number is 0898-326-325. You can expect to pay around 20K for his stuff.

Both of them will come out to your house and give you free estimates. Remember with your cabinets you will need to put down a rather large deposit and if you're not happy with them, too bad, you're not getting your deposit back. Which is one big reason I prefer to order from a factory.

Interesting you say that. The first shop I visited on Thepprasit had quite a selection of custom made cabinets, without any finish. And you are right, you could really see the flaws. I was amazed. I helped my Dad with a home he built in Las Vegas. All custom cabinets. And they are awesome. And not teak. They came out perfect. I guess if you stain them dark enough, as you say, you won't see the flaws.

The lowest price I have been given so far is 27k psm for teak, the highest was 43k psm. But I am still shopping and have NOT negotiated yet...as I am not ready to do so.

PK was closed when I went by yesterday. But that number you gave me is what I wrote down from a sign they have outside. I will call them tomorrow for sure.

I have looked at a bunch of "pre fab" cabinets. They are high end ones and not cheap. In most cases more than custom teak cabinets. I was amazed at the price at that shop by HomeWorks on Suk. I think it is Maidenform? Or something like that. Right next door to Office Depot. Very modern, lots of neat features, but incredible prices. Way more than I can afford.

Anyway, thanks for your comments! I will keep you updated as to my progress...

Craig,

Another one to try is EFAID (Eastern Furniture and Interior Design) on Chaiyapruek 2 opposite the sports stadium, a couple of my friends have been happy with their work, being away from the centre of town their prices may be a bit more realistic?? Worth a shot.

Lenny: That place looks great! I will check them out for sure.

Jellis: I am looking at both, but leaning towards solid teak. Obviously, going with laminate cuts the cost down a lot. I saw a sample 2 days ago and it looked pretty good. But don't have any prices to compare the two yet. As was mentioned above, with solid teak, and natural colors, you can see every imperfection. Nail holes, mistakes, filler, etc. You really have to have a good craftsman if you go that route. A darker stain seems to hide this fairly well though....

Well some may shout this down however, we had our large kitchen fitted by Index. Not cheap but they did an excellent job and their fitters have been out to sort out minor snags without a comment.

Like all things in life, you get what you pay for.

I went to Index on Saturday. It is HUGE. Pretty darn good selection. I hope to get some quotes this weekend, but you are right. Seems they are a bit more expensive than custom made teak cabinets. I saw them in the 35k to 55k baht psm range....and at Maidenform, even more! Same at Boonthavorn...where there is a really good selection and I was impressed by the sales reps knowledge. Not bad...much better than at HomePro...
