PHUKET CITY: Phuket City Police Superintendent Wanchai Ekpornpit has a passion – other than fighting crime, of course.

Col Wanchai is mad about coffee.

That’s why he came up with the idea for ‘The Seat’, a new coffee shop under construction next to Phuket City Police Station.

The Seat is a ‘police welfare project’ aimed at supplementing the 'meager income' of the station's men in brown.

Every Phuket City Police officer is a shareholder in the project, so each officer will get a cut of the profits at the end of each month.

You might call it ‘coffee money’.

Col Wanchai, a man who only drinks the finest coffee, beamed with excitement as he told the Gazette about the project.

“We’re going to use the very best beans to attract the city’s real coffee lovers,” he said.

The cafe will also serve cakes, though Col Wanchai would not be drawn on whether this would include donuts.

The 110-square-meter cafe will feature air conditioning, wireless internet, cable TV, ample parking and seating for 100 coffee lovers, 50 inside and 50 on an outdoor terrace – all in all a great place to hang out.

Col Wanchai said he hoped people would start to view Phuket City Police Station as “more than just a place to report crimes”.

“We want people to feel warm and welcome in our ‘police station for the people’,” he said.

“People can come and have a cup of coffee and go home with a smile,” he said.

“Everyone will feel relaxed in our café."

Construction is slated to finish on September 14, after which the police will hire a professional team to get ‘The Seat’ up and running “as soon as possible”, Col Wanchai said.

“Soon, everyone can come and taste my favorite coffee at ‘The Seat’,” he added.

Must be to compensate for the lost income from the jetski scam

The orders came from Phuket Provincial Police Commander Pigad Thantipong after he made a frank admission during a press conference that some police officers were knowingly allowing jet-ski operators to get away with massively overcharging tourists for repairs to the vehicles.

Good idea, a little competition never hurt other establishments in the area.

As for the name The Seat - not bad, not great.

Some others that come to mind would be...

The Hot Seat

Copacino's

Brown Sugar

Coffee and More, alot More.

Counting Beans

Tea for Two, Three and Four

Coffee, Tea or Me

feel free to add your own....

Where does the budget to build it come from ? :)

I had no idea police budgets had allowances to build coffee shops. It couldn't possible have anything to do with the latest police procurement budget just passed could it? Heavens how could I think that.

From all the tea that they acquire.

All very well but no donuts. :D

No doubt the coffee will be 50 Baht a cup for Thais and 400 for farangs.

:D

I think it's a good idea. If I'm ever in Fuuk it, I think I'll stop in and have a cup.

Hope he can make trip to Amsterdam to study the business idea.

I'm sure they have experience of that market as well. :)

Yeah, "Something for the weekend, sir?" Or: "Would you be needing anything else?

That would be a good business model.

It might improve the quality of the local "produce". Not that I have any empirical knowledge of

"certain substances". :)

Love It! It looks like while fat yed and the likes are busy plodding the beat for the 'Thailands finest' some people have got some time on their hands!

And in Pattayas branch fat yed will no doubt be available to mop up, empty the ashtrays and wipe the tops when told to.
