September 7, 200916 yr I am now planning the hip replacement or resurfacing. I hear from lots of people that the hospital reduces the risk of infection with nsaid pills such as celebrex or voltarin. But that is a bad idea since I take 20 mg/day enalapril, I see on the internet. Which options ? A different ACE pill or a different anti infection medication ? Thanks.
September 7, 200916 yr First let's correct a misconception you have. NSAID = Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug These are used for pain and inflammation (nothing to do with infection). Lately they have gotten some use for preemptive analgesia, ie. they are prior to surgery to reduce the need for other pain medications and to make you more comfortable. You could get along without them however, the NSAIDS, that is. You would then be treated with the standard opioids and paracetamol/acetaminophen. For infection, most likely you will get a dose or three of a cephalosporin, which is an ANTIBIOTIC. These are drugs used to prevent/treat infection. OK this is the short answer, hope it helps.
