Am trying to prepare ahead of time. About how much would a standard taxi cost from Suvarnabhumi airport to downtown say around Rama IV road near Carrefour? (How about to central area say MBK or Khao San Road).

Would having a boxed-up bicycle, a suitcase, and a full bag add to the price? How does the price scale work? All of those things might not fit in a small Toyota, would a van taxi be more?

Well... it depends...

If you get a dodgy one, it'll be 800+ baht

If you actually manage to a) find the 'official' taxi line and :) get one to turn the meter on, its about 500... but if you are not with Thai people they will probably drive a very indirect route and get it up to 700+...

I paid 220bt in a metered taxi last week, but not using the express way, to soi 4 Sukhumvit. Go to level 3 and grab a taxi that has just dropped someone off.

How long did it take and time of day?

Absolute BS....

Taxi lines are located in both ends of the terminal (arrival level).

- Fare by meter to lower sukhumvit around 200 to 300 depending on traffic.

- 50 baht airport surcharge

- 70 baht for expressway (optional)

If you are skint and want to save the 50 baht surcharge (half bottle of beer) or if the que is long go to departure level and hail taxi from there.

And yes the drivers might ask nowdays fixed fee but simple "No, turn the meter on" repeated few times will get them to turn it on.

If no luck let him to drive you to the hotel and give him 300 and walk away. He might protest but if you have your slip from the taxi line at airport ask the hotel staff to assist and tell them that he did not use meter after several requests from you. If you do this it is better to disappear to your room fast though before it gets out of hand :)

I've had couple of taxis this year that had rigged meters, showing longer than actual distance traveled thus more money in the meter. Nothing much you can do if you don't know the exact distance to your location. But if there is no traffic to mention and the meter shows 400 or more to lower sukhumvit or Rama IV you know it is rigged.

Good luck...

Did I get scammed? (From airport to Rama IV road near Carrefour).

Arrived in the afternoon and went to that level 2 taxi queue, three nice young ladies working at the booth. Keep in mind I had a big bicycle box and two suitcases that barely fit on the trolley (and hung off to the sides of it). I told them I wanted a normal taxi but they and a queue boy told me I would have to take a larger taxi, that really amounts to that of a jeep or something. They said the flat charge was 700 baht. I kept asking if there is a cheaper way and the young guy started to yell and get angry by saying my bike wouldn't fit into a regular taxi (even though I know it would if it were squeezed in real tight). They were adamant that 700 baht was the standard price for the 'larger' taxi. Did I get ripped off even by the trustworthy taxi stand workers?

Big bag, bigger price.

I would think that was ok.

But I got scammed by one of this new faster running Taximeters.

The Taximeter showed 62 km from Airport to Sukhumvit Soi Nana and 370 B. + 50 B. Airportcharge + 70 B. for Expressway, I wrote a complained on the paper you get from the Taxcounter at the airport.

The taximan tried to keep the paper with him, of course.

Maybe, maybe not know one knows for sure.

Usually there is also some bigger taxis in the que, those isuzu pickup modifications. But as i said who knows, how big is your bike and maybe there was only old small toyota's as usual. Also to be noted those ones do not have any room in the booth as it is filled with gas cylinder...
