glegolo
HiWas wondering if anybody had any ideas for the above ? Thanks. --------------------------------- Sorry friend!! But thai sallad???? Do you mean that crappy smelling stuff that they are cooking from the bushes and the trees and that they call sallad??? Or do you mean our kind of western sallad?? Because if you are eating THAI-SALLAD, I am sorry to say.. there is no cure for it.. Glegolo
hansnl
HiWas wondering if anybody had any ideas for the above ? Thanks. Presuming you are referring to a Farang style salad: Makro sells 1 kg plastic packs of salad cream with the name ARO on it, It is not too sweet, about 8% of sugar instead of the standard 12% Tastes reasonable, priced around 70-80 baht Or try to find salad cream from Heinz, around 100 baht a bottle. I also saw at Villa and Tops Remia salad cream from Holland Both the above NO SUGAR!!!!!!!!! Edited September 12, 2009 by hansnl
DP25
Ugh, salad cream, the most vile substance on earth. I didn't think any farangs actually ate that stuff and it was only for Thai people. Get some blue cheese, ranch, italian, russian, ceasar etc at Villa, Foodland, or Tops.

On a salad? Are you mad? Salad cream, dear Sir, definitely is not a Thai discovery. Salad cream, a little sour, on a salad.......perfect. Thai salad cream, like most farang.thai products, is mostly sugar. And as such completely unusable in salads. And for buying prepared salads in Thai shops.....no way.....sweet salad cream in there, or at least sugar.....no way. Tastes differ, thank g*d And I like sour salad cream, preferably Dutch style, but Heinz will do!
Jingthing
In case you didn't know, Salad Cream is generally unavailable in the US, and people say we don't have good taste. I assume the OP is looking for the standard Thai sauce on typical salads such as beef salad, yam woon sen, etc. etc. There is most def fish sauce in it. Shouldn't be hard to google a recipe. I do find it funny that the standard salad dressing for western salad is salad cream (English food), how did that happen when there are far superior salad dressing traditions from France and Italy? DP25
I had never encountered salad cream in my entire life until coming to Thailand. Figured it was a failed Thai version of Western sauces.
aircut
Assuming the OP meant a simple YAM dressing you can start with a basic 1:1 lime juice to fish sauce, add pinch of sugar and handful of crushed chilies. That will do.

That will do. Thats what I meant, Thank you Aircut. Obviously I would'nt come on here to post a request for salad cream or anything of the sort. I did specify "Thai". As they say in exams "read the question".

Michaelaway
HiWas wondering if anybody had any ideas for the above ? Thanks. We like to cook. If you do, try this recipe if you have a kitchen and a few minutes. All the ingredients are available locally. My farang friends like it, and my girlfriend's family seem to love it! Had 'em all to a Taco & Salad dinner one time, with all the fixings. Put out a bowl of BIG DOG SALAD SAUCE... gone, with everything else! You shoulda seen it: A Mexican (style) dinner; concocted by an American; served up to 12 Thai's ranging in age from 6 to 63; a couple of Englishmen; an Irish guy, & another American dude... Really cool to see all these different people chowing-down & laughing and talking between mouthfuls... great! Anyway, good luck farang! -Michael PS- Ahh, American... not a salad cream fan, sorry. BIG DOG SALAD SAUCE (a Thai-taste Russian Dressing) Mayonnaise (8 oz) Ketchup (3 oz) Sri Racha Chili Sauce (4-6 TBS) Tabasco Sauce, to taste (optional) Worcestershire Sauce (2-3 squirts) Sesame Oil (2 TBS) Garlic, minced (4-6 cloves) Cilantro, minced (2 TBS) Basil, minced (1 TBS) Shallot, minced (1 TBS) 1-2 small Chili's, minced (optional) Salt (1/2 TSP) Ground Pepper (1/4 TSP) Sugar (a pinch) Procedure- Fine-mince all the vegetables and place in a bowl. Add the Mayonnaise; Ketchup; Chili Sauce; Worcestershire Sauce; Sesame Oil; and finally, the Salt, Pepper & Sugar. Taste after mixing well, then add a bit more of what's needed. You're looking for a dressing/sauce texture & a salmon color. Edited October 3, 2009 by Michaelaway

chiliwasabi
^ Yeah but Som Tam isn't usually classed as a Thai salad. But then again a lot of what is classed as salad in Thailand doesn't always contain a lot of vegetable matter.
