Anti-car bomb barriers at Apec hotels

BANGKOK (dpa) - Some Bangkok hotels housing delegates for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit plan to erect car-bomb barriers, a news report said Wednesday.

Both Thailand's Shangri-La and Sukhothai hotels placed orders with a Thai manufacturer for the "car blocks", which manufactures say would halt a vehicular suicide mission, the Bangkok Post reported.

Each 17 kilogramme iron block fastened by chains will be placed on the road outside the luxury hotels to stop incoming vehicles. The block is able to stop in its tracks explosive-laden automobiles weighing up to 6 tonnes.

Upon impact, the manufacturer says, the car is lifted and comes to a complete halt, far enough away from the hotel to prevent any serious damage.

Product researcher Major Songpol Iam-bunrit said his team developed the bomb-stopping equipment a week after a explosive-packed lorry destroyed the United Nations headquarters in Baghdad in August.
