Fiance Visa - Uk Council Tax

Featured Replies

Does anyone know whether UK council tax single person's discount still applies when a Thai moves in on a fiance visa?

I assume not as it's a settlement visa. On the other hand, she can't work and has no recourse to public funds.

Single persons discount means just that in the UK - Single person! If you have someone staying with you on a permanent basis and you inform the Council you will be charged full rate.

Cheers. There are some exemptions, however; although I've done a bit more searching on the internet and I don't think any apply in this case.

The advice from the previous post is correct, however, residents in Hampshire are particularly vulnerable to additional Council Tax charges where they pertain to overseas guests, especially those from Thailand so do tread carefully because the penalties are draconian these days.

?

Settlement visa - pay up. Only argument is that you have to marry within 6 months and thus could potentially raise an argument on that basis as waiting to see whether to proceed with marriage or have her return home.

As she is not settled i would wait until you are married however up to you :)

having documentation from the council as early as possible is good evidence of proof of relationship that can be used later on when applying for ILR. i would consider this when deciding wether or not to have to pay for things that are 'official'

There is a big difference between a fiancee settlement visa and a fiancee visit visa. New Forest District Council did not charge council tax when my wife had the fiancee visit visa (common sense!!) but after marriage we put her on officially - mainly as it is needed as proof of residence for her to get a bank account.

Quite useful to have her on the register anyway - it helps smooth things out with all the rules and regs regarding place of residence. It makes a big difference to credit scores etc in the long run!

One should also remember that claiming the single occupant's discount when in fact there are two or more adults living in the property is, I believe, a criminal offence!

Obviously, this does not apply if the other person is just a visitor.
