Marine police make massive heroin haul

SONGKHLA: -- Police in the southern province of Songkhla yesterday seized 546 kilograms of heroin worth over Bt1.6 billion from a fishing boat about to embark for Hong Kong, the biggest haul by the marine police in over a decade.

The raid, which involved both local marine police officers and officers from the US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), also saw the arrest of five Hong Kong nationals, named as Mr. Chun Wah Kong, Mr. Chi Fai Leung, Mr. Foon Lee, Mr. Chun Wa-Ng and Mr. Kam Chuen Leung.

The five men will be charged with attempting to smuggle heroin out of the country.

Police were first alerted to the crime when a speedboat carrying the drugs left Trat Province yesterday, taking the heroin to Songkhla Province where it was transferred onto the fishing vessel.

Pol. Gen. Phiewphan Damaphong, deputy national police chief, said that the 546 kilogram haul represented the largest of its kind in a decade.

Actually the truth is that police were really first alerted to the crime when the American DEA told them about it. That's how almost all of the big drug busts are made here. You don't think the Thai cops want to do this kind of stuff on their own, do you?

There's no need for them to risk such dangerous work, not when the Farang Volunteer Police Group are on the job.
