Phuket Independence

Featured Replies

Here's a question for the forum. Has Phuket ever had an independence movement or talk of becoming its own nation? I am not advocating this but wonder if it has ever been discussed. Phuket is rather unique in Thailand (both good and bad) and suffers unfairly from a lot of the fallout from the political crisis in other parts of the nation.

:)

Good lord why?

JJ president?

ha, the police can't even control jet ski owners... how the hel_l would this new country be "ran"

It was effectively independent many many years ago but jet ski pirates would have been the least of your worries.

However the poor Phuket people will never see independence again as sovereignty has long been lost what with 95% of beachfront land being owned by farang and the like. :)

There were rumours that Thailand were going to sell Phuket to Singapore. There are probably threads in the archives here. It was only a couple of years back. No one believed it to be possible and it won't happen but given the current preoccupation with scamming and corruption, wouldn't it be interesting?

All allowed now.

About as likely to happen as New York, London or Sydney becoming independent.

It would be a terrible idea whichever way you look at it.

I wonder whether Singapore would buy anything from Thaksin again. :)
