Yeah, difference being, they actually try to catch and prosecute (or extract big bribes) when they know of gambling offenses.

Actually in the US, whether poker is legal varies by state and also the venue and whether or not there's a rake.

In some states, home games aren't legal, though that law in the past was very rarely enforced. Enforcement picked up during the Bush regime (maybe they thought poker breeds terrorists?).

I just searched for one of my "favorite" stories on that but couldn't find it: Illinois (if I remember right) police raided a home poker game, where all the players were off-duty policy officers from another police department. The poker players -- all armed -- thought they were being robbed, since the police raiding them weren't uniformed and didn't immediately identify themselves. The players opened fire, the raiding police returned fire, and few left the room alive.
