How Much Did You Pay For Your Haggled Goods?

Recommended Posts

The correct price for any item that you have haggled for is.....

The price you are happy to pay......

Hopefully this thread will make the prices people are happy to pay lower than they would have been happy paying before. That's the whole point.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

And a good point to konangrit. Its a fact no Thai is going to tell you how much you should be paying.

I agree. Most of them start at a ridiculously high price and expect to be haggled down....usually between a third and a half of the asking price is accepted.....toklong :D

I see....so If I tell people that I bought something 3 years ago for X amount...then they should expect to pay the same price for the same item now.... :D

and....lets say I pay 150 for something and you pay 100 for the same thing...the difference is something like US$1...or AUD$1.40....not even the cost of a beer....I think I will hire my signature out..... :D

you guys are talking peanuts here......have any of you haggled a goldsmith down 800 baht on a gold chain...now that would be worthy of telling :o

Well 50 baht might be peanuts to you and me but to a lot of the guys in Pattaya who go on a budget and are buying maybe 20 DVD`s then 1000baht is maybe 2 or 3 nights accommodation.

Yes auburns when buying good jewellery of any substantial quality and value you can get excellent discounts as well try it and see.

The point is if you pay the asking price you either don`t care or have so much money it doesn`t matter...and yes the Thais think we are stupid if we pay the asking price. :D

My point is that if the retailer is happy and the buyer is happy, it is a win/win situation......the best price is the price you are happy with. I never said you should pay the asking price.

I have also seen guys start getting cranky at a retailer because..." last year my mate only paid xxxx for this"

You are a bit touchy....my peanuts comment was a generalisation....but even still 20 DVD's at a difference of 10 baht each is still only 200 baht saving.....the price of nearly 3 beers. :D

BTW I did get the said discount from the goldsmith.... :D

gburns,

How about adding something constructive to this thread and posting how much you paid for the gold chain, weight etc etc, maybe you could save someone else 800 Baht. Then again, you might find out that everyone else is getting 1500 Baht knocked off and you overpaid. This is an item I wouldn't have a clue to the price as I never buy gold, so would be in a position to get ripped off.

No-one here is posting what they paid several years ago, just current prices in Pattaya. I didn't have the thought of people travelling to the other side of town to save 10 baht when I started this thread, just thought it would be helpful to know how much is a sensible price to pay for things.

But they do. If he asks for ten, he means eight and he wants six. So it's probably worth four. Offer two.

DVD's 150 baht

Playstation Games 100 baht in Pattaya, 80 baht in Sirracha.

Fake T-shirt large 4xl size 200baht

Tailored cotton shirt 600 baht

Tailored trousers 1100 baht

Short time 500 baht

Music CD 100 baht

Silk tie 50 baht

Plastic sunglasses 20 baht

Shorts 200 baht

I'm not saying these are the best prices availible but I've lived in Pattaya for 4 years and these are the things I buy regularly and the prices seem readily acceptable to almost all vendors (and girls :o )

I would say that is a pretty accurate list, BUT for the pale face just off the plane

the asking price me be 4X as much.

If you make a counter offer and it is accepted quickly, then you are still paying too much.

It helps if you can speak Thai.

gburns the difference between 150 baht and 100 baht is 50 baht multiply by 20 then that = 1000 baht or it did when I went to school :o:D ...and as I said it could be 2 or 3 nights accommodation to some guy... :D

I thought I was being constructive......must be the ex car salesman in me :o ....to a car salesman the ideal win/win situation is indeed where both the parties are happy with the deal... irrespective of the price paid. But you did pick my point up...If a price quoted here is less than someone has paid recently then you have a p*****d off person, who was otherwise happy with his deal and negotiating skills, I just dont like to burst peoples bubbles.

I cant quote the gold deal it was too long ago, but I was told that goldshops wouldnt bargain and just tried it on for a bit of cheek....surprised he11 out of me that the shop did discount.....I picked up 2 pairs of fold up reading glasses in belt cases (ideal for my work) for 100 baht each a few months ago .....but I didnt haggle as the purchase was set by a friend who buys from this guy all the time...didnt even get to the asking price....

Just bought a couple of T-shirts for 150 Baht each. Only just got back on-line so couldn't check this thread before, see that someone else pays 120 Baht. Think I'll get over the 60 baht more I paid, but will know for next time. :o

Also got a puncture at the front of my bike, was unable to repair it, so 80 Baht to fit a new innertube. Got him to put a new basket on the front for 160 Baht, and fit a spring to the stand for 20 Baht. I let him keep the change from 300, I'm not as tight as this thread may suggest. :D

Will probably wake up to find the tyres on my bike slashed and the basket caved in with his business card stuck to the mirror. :D

A quick caveat about DVD's,

Even if the label and cover say "DVD9" on them, it doesn't mean the disk is DVD9. Once in a while, a cover/label saying DVD9 is the only one available to the "copiers", and I doubt any of them would ever take the time to Photoshop the DVD9 logo off.

The store on the 4th floor of Tukcom (near the northeast corder with red shelves) has always given me quality DVD's, and they are always happy to let you preview the DVD on their system. The only problem I had was the 6-disk set of CSI:Miami Season Two, where the first two disks skipped bad. They offered replacements, but the replacements skipped on their player, so it was the source material that was comprimized. I exchanged it hassle-free.

What others have said about newly-released movies holds very true. The only time I ever got a 100% copy of a movie that was still in theaters was LOTR:Return of the King, when I bought a copy a week after the US release date.. of course, big-title movies like that have pirated 100% digital copies floating around weeks before they're released. I expect the new Star-Wars movie to be made available on 100% DVD9 right around the release date.
