My (new) Favorite Thai Word

คิกขุอาโนเนะ (คิกขุ)

This from the "Dictionary of New Thai Words"

pronounced something like "khik-khu-aa-noh-may" or just "khik-khu"

probably of Japanese origin (not sure) ... closest English word is "cutesy"

describes that uniquely Asian pop style of sickly sweet cutsiness - imagine pop singers in pony tails and school uniforms, bouncing around and flashing V-signs and winking at the camera.

And we are not talking about Coyote dancers here (leuy!)

Much worse than the "bubblegum" pop of the 70's - so bad, in fact, I cannot stop watching it! :)

Anyway, favorites are ephemeral - I'll have a new one soon.

You might enjoy this thread in which some thai teenagers discuss its origin and meaning; one of the interesting upshots if you read down far enough is that many of them suggest it has the connotation of ปัญญาอ่อน

Softwater :)

Interesting. The OP (Thai kid) really had no idea at all of the meaning or usage. It must be a very new word.

And come to think of it, I have a khiku-loving niece who would definitely fall into the ปัญญาอ่อน category. Not sure about the causal relationship ... a chicken-n-egg question for sure.
