Theyreallrubbish
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/...-Koh-Samui.html This is probably the biggest selling newspaper in the UK and its quite a prominent story on their Sunday webpage. The story itself is typical Daily Mail in not really sparing any of the horrific details. And the ending makes it seem as if rape and murder is common in Thailand. Another nail in the coffin etc. but this kind of story in this kind of newspaper will have a real impact. This isn't some drunk sex tourist getting beaten up in Pattaya that most people can say they'd never go there or act like that, this is a regular woman getting into a random taxi and for no reason being raped, beaten and robbed. The other thing is the way the media works. Being in a paper like the Mail means it'll be run in hundreds, maybe thousands of other publications worldwide
EffectiveAnger
And the ending makes it seem as if rape and murder is common in Thailand. Murder is 'common' in Thailand. It's listed at 14th in the world for the highest murder (per capita) http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_mur_...ders-per-capita Rape? Thailand is listed at #27 http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_rap_...apes-per-capita The thing of it is, the world doesn't seem to care if it's just another poor SE Asian, but if the victim is white, from the UK and a tourist, then the media takes the story full storm. KhaoNiaw
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/...-Koh-Samui.htmlThis is probably the biggest selling newspaper in the UK In its dreams. Yes, the 'hang, draw and quarter 'em' types who wouldn't trust 'johnny foreigner' will make sure they avoid Thailand. I don't really disagree with your underlying point but bigging up the Daily Mail is quite funny. It's preaching to the converted.

And interestingly, according to those Nationmaster figures, the UK features at #13 on the rape list making it more dangerous than Thailand. A fact not noted by the Daily Mail! PattayaBunLover
I often see young farang women (alone but more often in pairs) wandering around Pattaya late at nite apparently oblivious to the danger they are in and what a trophy they would be to many of the taxi drivers in town...apparently not readers of the Daily Mail. Meridian007
When my girlfriend told me about this, I said something similar to the OP. Despite all the posters who post "another nail in the coffin" in threads about the political unrest here, I think that most tourists could care less. What they think about is anything that affects them directly such as this. Yes, it is a pity that the plight of S.E.Asians who get raped on a regular basis does not figure prominently in the media, but western media looks out for its own interests, and a story like this sells papers. Its a sad situation, and my condolences go out to this poor woman. The world is a dangerous place...

Whatever you think of the Daily Mail's politics its number 2 daily and on SUndays with over 2 million sales. Contrast that with the Guardian at 380k a day and you can see the difference in impact. aussiejosh
I have a feeling those rankings plain ignore africa... I can't imagine the UK being 13th with Africa in the talley. In some countries there the rape rates are so high you meet a woman and you might as well toss a coin to judge if she has been raped or not. Thailand is pretty bad, I mean Africa is hel_l, but Thailand's definitely not heave. As for the Daily mail, I have a feeling any reader of the daily mail who chooses not to visit Thailand will probably benefit Thailand.
EffectiveAnger
I have a feeling those rankings plain ignore africa... I can't imagine the UK being 13th with Africa in the talley. Africa is a continent. The U.K. is a country on the continent of Europe. Let's compare apples to apples, please. Take a closer look at those figures and pay attention to what country is ranked first in rape (per capita); it's South Africa. You'll see plenty of other African countries there on the list too.
