Is an expat's housing allowance or car allowance taxed the same as income?

The last time I was employed here in 2002 all benefits were included for tax calculations, not sure if this is still the case.

I'm not sure what the laws on, but I know that in practicality, it depends on the employer. In terms of international schools, some do not tax housing allowances, some do.

Yes it is taxable, unless your company can put it through some other expense route that doesn't relate specifically to you. If it goes through on your salary slips then you will pay tax.

My car for example is a 'pool car', available for any staff to use for business. Not true obviously but it saves me about 7k a month in personal tax

Yes taxed. The "pool" car is a good one. Need to check with my Controller. Company pays my tax anyway.
